Pioneer Camping: Spring Fed Pond
Really enjoyed our stay!
It was a bit tricky getting into the spot but with Kevin’s help, we backed our bus into this beautiful spot next to his pond, where we bathed and cooled off in the morning sun with views of the mountains in the distance. Kevin was super friendly, helpful and welcoming and I would welcome anybody who wants a humble, natural experience.

Roughing it: Barn room-Glamping?
Forget the tent, barn stay!
I really liked staying in Kevin's barn room! Kevin is super kind and responsive when you need him. He knows some good walking and hiking spots in the area, too! This barn room is great if you'd like to camp in a modest farm/permaculture setting and would like to avoid pitching a tent. That is the level of camping I was looking for and I got it. As advertised, there were four walls and a roof, a full sized bed, an overhead light, a window and an electrical outlet. It is not 100% airtight so you will experience outside temperatures and may be rooming with a few bugs but you're completely kept from the rain, which was perfect for me. There is a dry cedar chip composting toilet available in another part of the barn you may like to keep a large sealable container around to serve as an outdoor chamberpot if you don't fancy the idea of taking a hike to pee in the woods near other houses. Then you can just go empty it at your leisure, fully clothed. Solved. :) A road runs two to three yards from the barn but it is very seldom used. In the two evenings/nights and two early mornings that I was actually in the room, I heard a maximum of something like six cars pass. There are a few cows and chickens wandering around. They are sweet and pretty dang quiet. Wear your galoshes, bring water, pack warm stuff if the weather is chilly, and come with joy in your heart to be in this beautiful nook of the mountains! Like that, you'll have a most fabulous stay. I know I will be coming back!

Pioneer Camping: Spring Fed Pond
Serene slice of nature
The pond at Kevin's is a beautiful, serene slice of nature. I ate meals at the picnic table and used the stone fireplace to do a small grilling session. The basic outhouse is conveniently located. I enjoyed being surrounded by the summer symphony of bugs and being under all the stars at night. The campground is located right next to a gravel road and a streetlamp. The road does not have much traffic (it's a driveway for the surrounding houses) but is loud when it is used. The lamp can be seen as a benefit in some ways since it provides light for part of the campground. The privacy wall provides cover from both the lamp and the road. There's not really good hiking/walking directly from Kevin's place but the Big Ivy park is close by and provides some really great hikes. Kevin is a kind human and hospitable host :) he made sure to answer any questions I had. You may see him tending to his property or, if you're lucky, flying his hot air balloon in the morning.

Pioneer Camping: Spring Fed Pond
Great stay, nice place, kind host
Great place to stay! The pond is refreshing and the site has a flat space for camping. It is private despite being close to the road and a has composting toilet… just what what you need if you’re looking for primitive camping. And it’s near Asheville. Kevin is knowledgeable of the land and has a nice holistic approach to ecological land development. He rotates cows throughout the site to prepare sites for housing. In addition to other strategies he was kind enough to share. Great vision. Highly recommend, would stay again.

Pioneer Camping: Spring Fed Pond
wonderful stay with much potential
Kevin was an awesome host, wish i would have had more time to talk to him, but that just means more reason to come back! Nice seeing cows instead of bears near the campsite.

Pioneer Camping: Spring Fed Pond
Kevin is a super nice guy. Genuine and very helpful. Property was quite different from the listing, however we did book last minute and I understand there wasnt much time to notify me of how it looked currently. Worked out fine for July 4th weekend, just not curently an ideal place to go when pisgah forest has free camping sites in abundance on most weekends that are more suited to camping than Kevins property. Message beforehand to check on property status.
