I had a lovely time here. Jeanine is an absolutely wonderful person, and her horses are just as friendly. The unique part about this property is that you can hang out with the horses as much as you want! They love attention, and you can go right into their pen and feed them carrots, pet them, and spoil them.
I also like that you’re close to civilization. You can pop down the road to Walmart for supplies, have lunch at a diner, go shopping, etc.
It's true that the land is a little rough around the edges, and is definitely a more primitive camping experience. No shower, or bathrooms (bring toilet paper and dig a hole, etc.) She does have a hose for water, but I’d suggest bringing your own.
Overall though, it was a nice stay. I loved meeting the horses, and they're very curious about new people :)
This place is great and so is the host! It was my first time camping. Jeanine was helpful throughout our stay in regards to anything we needed. The location is within walking distance to great restaurants, big grocery store and awesome water park. The horses are friendly and overall it was a good experience for first time camping.
One of the most amazing experiences! The horses are beyond amazing and super sweet. They love to be fed and always enjoy the attention. The campsite was perfect as well, a great clearing with flat ground and a great little grill to burn firewood. Jeanine is so kind and made us feel right at home, she even offers riding lessons :) we will definitely be going back!
What a lovely visit!
The Mustang Stables and Camp was a great place to camp! Jeanine was attentive and engaging. She gave us a tour of her barn and encouraged us to make ourselves at home or at camp (ha!). We created a nice fire pit that we hope will be used by the next campers. My three year old and my wife enjoyed riding Jeanine's horse, Cathy. We also enjoyed the camp's proximity to civilization. We went swimming at the Beacon Public pool and were able to grab some essentials from the local grocery store. Thanks again!
Great host great spot
You must ask for a ride on beautiful KT an amazing horse who was great for kids had my 9yr old son cantering within the hour. What a blast! Janine was a brilliant and patient trainer. So many great places to eat nearby and we hit the water park which is 3mins away
Magical majestic stay!
We had an absolutely INCREDIBLE time. Jeanine was so helpful and so sweet. We checked in and set up camp, went for a hike by the Hudson, and then had a really relaxing evening by the fire. We did have a little trouble starting the fire because our wood was a bit damp but because the town was only a quick drive away we were able to pick up a fire starter log and have a really nice fire! The location could not have been better for a fun trip with friends outside of the city. Plus - we woke up to the pony (Tikka) grazing around and saying good morning. Truly a magical, majestic weekend! The only thing I would point out - the google maps brings you the wrong way once you’re on smith town road rely on the mailboxes NOT google maps or you will end up at the wrong horse farm (whoops!). Jeanine’s mailbox is across the street from her driveway (look for a steep hilled driveway)!
Ticks, poison ivy and worse!
Driving up, we thought we were at the wrong place. Everything was overgrown, there was a dilapidated house with an old, bedraggled camper on a liter-strewn yard. Driving up to the campsite, there was waist-high grass and malnourished horses. The campsite was large, but again overgrown and in the site-line of the owner’s house. Setting up camp was a challenge because of an abundance of poison ivy. The owner greeted us (after an unpleasant run-in with her “friend” who presumably came to feed the horses.) We expresses our excitement about riding from the first contact through hipcamp, although repeated request for details and cost went unanswered. The second day she came and asked us if we were ready to ride. We were led to a small enclosure where we presumed she would gauge our abilities before going on a ride. What ensued was an hour and 45 minutes of “learning how to turn” for each of us, but no riding outside of the enclosure (My husband and I been riding for over 20 years and our 14 year old has been riding since she was 5). Only after a very uncomfortable exchange about having to pay for our “lesson” outside of hipcamp, we thought we were going horseback riding, but she just put each of us on a horse (taking turns on a single horse) around in circles with most of the time, she just talked and told the same stories over and over. As we were walking away, dumbfounded, she repeated that we needed to pay via PayPal and the “lesson” would be $70/hour. We felt duped and went home with our dogs covered in ticks and all of us with poison ivy. When we got home, I sent her an email that I was working long hours and would pay her in a couple of days when I could get in front of a computer for 5 minutes. Two days later we received a nasty email threatening to sue us for failing to pay. I then requested a formal invoice to create a paper trail and the first one was for more time than we had.
This was a horrible experience and we are fairly certain the horse “lessons” were to pay for a habit. HipCamp clearly does not check the properties or perform due diligence on the owners.
Stay far away from this site.
