No review can do this place justice.. Yet here's my attempt. The drive to the property sets the tone, winding through the mountains on your way to Madrid. There were plenty of scenic lookouts and the Garden of the Gods nearby was a nice stop. The directions were easy to follow, no stress or wrong turns on the way up to the camp. We arrived early, and got to see the hard work that goes into preparing the site. Our host J was great.. He was friendly and helpful, while respecting our privacy completely. We felt the solitude, yet knew he was there for whatever we may have needed. The property itself will remain the best part however.. A private canyon, minutes from the Madrid Cemetary, with great sunsets and a solar shower/compost toilet to add to the amenities.. I plan to return as soon as I have the opportunity. Thanks again!

Thunderball: Scaramanga Film RanchA souvenir from our host! We'll be sure to watch the show when we get back.

We had a fabulous stay! Our secluded campsite had amazing views of the canyon below. J was so friendly and accommodating. He went above and beyond! He helped me with a flat tire we had on our camper and loaned me tools to fix another mishap. We loved the secluded beauty of this site and really enjoyed J’s custom sunset tour and visit to the quirky graveyard nearby. We’d definitely come again!

Black mesa vineyards & petroglyphs

The Black Mesa Winery offers an excellent shop and tasting room as well as quiet lawn area with picnic table to enjoy the many hummingbirds and birds that come to all of the feeders Jerry tends. We bought both the Albariño and the Chardonnay. Albariño was my favorite! (outside alcohol unless it’s in a coffee cup!)

The actual vineyards were lush green (June) and well marked for each varietal. There is a great little walk around the vineyard and home carefully highlighting petroglyphs on the property. A labyrinth and bench offers further seclusion or meditation time.
Jerry could not have been more helpful or welcoming. His story of the vineyard is heartwarming and they will get through Covid, and their new Cider will be the hottest new beverage.
Note that parking is on the lot on the road. It can be quite dusty and there is road noise. Spend your time on the grassy, quiet compound before heading to bed!
