If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
The campsite is a sweet little area behind the owner’s cafe. Its a convenient little spot right off the highway if you’re passing through town or on your way to Taos. We stayed over before heading to Cieneguilla Stables to go horseback riding which is less than a mile away (which was incredible, side note). I think we may have been some of the first guests to stay here, so here are some things I would have wanted to know prior to our stay:
+Richard was a super accommodating host and made sure we had everything we needed, including wifi, power, water, and firewood for the beautiful Adobe fire pit by the campsite.
+The bathroom was available during cafe hours, otherwise a port-o-potty was available for use.
+Convenient spot for campers looking for above amenities.
+Host has two adorable cartoon-like dogs.
+Super close to the rio grande gorge.
-His place is a stone’s throw from the highway so we periodically heard noise from trucks and cars passing by.
Richard’s place was exactly as described. While. It typical for a camp site, the amenities made it more than worth it. A covered patio with a fireplace and firewood was greatly appreciated and utilized on the cold December nights and mornings we stayed there. Access to electricity made car camping a breeze. The walk down to the Rio Grand was a highlight of the stay.
Richard was a very nice, communicative, and helpful host. We used this Pilar camp as a base camp for skiing at Taos mountain for 4 nights. Its about a 40 min drive up to the ski area, but we enjoyed camping in the lower / warmer elevation. We brought our mini camper. The site is on a concrete pad, and theres a little incline to get up to it, so practice your backing up trailer skills before you arrive! Our 50 ft. Extension cord barely reached to the working 110 outlet. We especially enjoyed evenings around the adobe fireplace. There are a few non-functioning cars about but dont let that bother you :) The bathroom was acceptable. We enjoyed that there was hot water in the bathroom and a flush toilet as other campgrounds in the area have closed bathrooms at the moment. Be aware theres no cell service down there, but he has a fast internet connection.
Able to book but no communication?
Didn’t get to stay at place. Host never contacted us and host never showed us where campsite was. We were given directions to the front of the yacht club and then couldn’t find the campsite from there. I would like a complete refund.
Great spot with lots of amenities!
Richard’s place in Pilar was a great place to stay. He was very helpful and responsive, answering any questions we had and more! Right off the highway and very convenient, his camping area offers electric and bathrooms with hot and cold water, a lovely expansive area with couches and tables in the shade and a very wonderful outdoor kiva fireplace with all the wood and kindling provided. He was so very kind, hospitable and helpful with all out questions about the area. I highly recommend his place for a great stopover!
