This small 2-room cabin is very isolated on a mountain top at approximately 9,300 foot elevation. It is very rustic and in the forest with beautiful views of the valley below and surrounded by fir and aspen forest.
The cabin is mostly unfurnished (except for shelving, a couple tables and 5 chairs, so bring your own bedding (cots, sleeping bags, pillows, blankets).
There is no electricity or heat. You have lots of privacy and solitude here, and although there is a cabin on the adjoining property, it is hidden by the forest.
We have about 3 miles of trails on our 139-acre property, and we will provide you a trail map and show you around if you ask! Feel free to hike our trails and explore.
Keep in mind that this cabin is on top of a mountain (Ocate Mesa) and there is a lot of wildlife: elk, black bears, coyotes, chipmunks, and possibly a mountain lion. This means that you must keep the cabin clean, do not leave food outside or in the open, and do not bring any meats (only pre-cooked meats or dried jerky are allowed) that require cooking as these can attract wildlife. There are no kitchen appliances (refrigerator, stove, etc.) so you will need to bring your own cooler for food, storage containers for your food, etc. The cabin does close up securely, so it is safe to leave food inside as long as it is in containers. The road to get here is rough in places, so an AWD or 4WD vehicle with clearance is necessary. It is uphill all the way and somewhat steep. So take it slow and watch for ruts and rocks. Hope to see you on this beautiful mountaintop!

Great rustic place to spend some time hiking and relaxing in solitude. Views are breathtaking!! The cabin is cozy and clean. Some limited supplies are available which is great, but need to be prepared with heat source, lighting, cooking stove, and water. Plenty of loose firewood around to grab and fire pit is nice and large for a great warm evening. Cheers!!
Our stay at Ocate Mesa Property was more than we expected. Located about 20 minutes up the mountain outside of Ocate, this space offered seclusion, beautiful views and peace.
This space felt safe and comfortable and Crystal, the host was very communicative and answered all our questions. She even provided us with a trail map.
We especially enjoyed all of the hiking trails located on the property. There are some that go right down to the cliffs and the views are well worth the 20 minute or so walk. Just be careful when you are walking the trails, some of the trail markers have a tendency to get knocked over by the wildlife (all that good scratching!) so we missed a marker and had to double back. It was all beautiful though and well worth it.
Just a warning, the final road to the cabin is quite rocky and you will need a 4x4 drive vehicle with a decent clearance to get there. Take it slow and you'll be just fine. This is the perfect space for those who want to get away from it all and just relax.
We enjoyed our time very much and will be back!

Aspen Cabin had everything we needed/wanted for our get-away. Since we usually camp in remote areas, this experience was "luxury" for us! We didn't even have to pitch a tent! Crystal and her partner Star were easy to communicate with and Star was so kind to give us a tour of the off-grid retreat center and tell us a bit more about the property (the retreat center is not far, but the cabin is very secluded and you have complete privacy) There is a house being built "over yonder" (you can barley see it from the cabin). The owners of the house were building one of the the 4 days we were there and had their radio up loud. It wasn't quite the peace and quiet we were after and our hosts kindly asked the neighbors to turn down the music, which they did. All of the other days were very peaceful and we enjoyed just hanging out at the cabin. We took a few walks on the trails and the views/surroundings can't be beat! There is so much land to explore! The view from the cabin is just spectacular as well. The bedroom has HUGE windows that look directly out over the mountains-it's a fantastic sight to wake up to in the morning! One day we drove into Angel Fire and did some mountain biking; the drive was scenic, and took about an hour or so.
Make sure to take enough supplies with you because there really isn't anything nearby (that's the point of this place, right?) A note about the directions: the high ten road is only 1 mile from where the pavement turns to gravel (we watched our odometer to check), not 2 like in the directions. When you get to the top of the road and go through the gate, stay to the left (there's a street sign-if you turn right onto the "loop" or Oak drive, it will take you to the retreat center). Then up on the right there are 2 posts to drive through as you turn. You'll pass a little red barn and corral on your right. You'll pass a dirt rd. on your left. Go a little further and another dirt rd. will be to your left and marked with a wooden stake topped with a bit of bright orange. That is the road to Aspen Cabin.
We definitely recommend 4WD or AWD, as the road is very rocky and slow-going. The area is gorgeous and we are already trying to figure out when we can go back!

What a gorgeous property. The road is pretty serious must have AWD and high clearance. Lots of extras in the cabin like flashlights toilet paper a pot and pans, soaps & utensils coffee cups. Also camp chairs provided. Spent hours watching the sky from that porch... great communication from host. The trails were really fun to tool around on, Ocate Cliffs a must check out. Thanks Crystal & Star
Crystal & Star were wonderful hosts. We had everything we needed while we were there. The view is breathtaking. The trails were great! We hope to come back & stay longer. Thank you!
The Aspen Cabin on Ocate Mesa is a very special place. I absolutely cannot wait to go back. Crystal is a wonderful host & I am so grateful that she is willing to share the magic of the mountain via a stay at the cabin. We spent a lot of time hiking around the beautiful property & could not have enjoyed our time more.

Beautiful view from the cabin deck. Wildlife all around, an amazing weekend getaway.
