Located in the mountains by Pecos, only 25 min drive to Santa Fe and 15 min to the Pecos canyon. Get the best of both worlds. Suitable for a couple or small family that seeks an outdoor experience and want to reconnect with nature. "Prairie Fire" has no electricity but candles, solar lights and oil lamps do the job. Site is very secluded. Bring along tents if you have a bigger group of people. Cell reception is spotty depending on provider and location. Wi-Fi access only available by parking area/host residence.
Enjoy the unique experience in the magical La Cueva valley right by the Santa Fe National Forest. Pitch your tent or stay in our romantic hand painted 18' tipi "Prairie Fire" overlooking the arroyo on our picturesque 30 acre forest property. The cozy space has a queen size bed and a couch that turns into a bed. Do you take the road less traveled and like to be off the beaten path? Friendly pets are welcome, we do recommend to leave them on a leash especially if they tend to wander. There is a lot of wildlife that comes through. Please do not feed the wildlife and keep your food locked up or up in the trees. We do have bears, mountain lions, chipmunks, raccoons, deer, bobcats and many birds. , etc.
The restroom is a converted open air horse trailer with hot water while weather permits, (bathroom available at owner residence during cold weather), electricity and a compost toilet. Plenty of firewood than can be collected to make a fire if there is no fire ban in place in Santa Fe County (fire ban generally from May through early July before the monsoon season). The fire pit may be used to cook.
Please contact host if you plan to arrive before 6 pm.
We consider last minute stays, overnighters, and tent camping.
Things to consider and be aware of:
We're located about 2 miles down a dirt road. During bad weather the road might be slippery and it might be difficult to access the property without a 4x4 or all wheel drive vehicle.
To get to the tipi, it's a short walk. If you have a 4x4, you can drive to the site if the weather permits (at your own risk).
Best to do shopping and get gas in Santa Fe before you head up the mountain as there are only a few options.
We are at 7,300 feet. It gets cold during the winter months. Bring warm layers.
Things to do: A hiking trail wanders to the top of the hill that is overlooks our valley. If you want to explore more, the county dirt road goes up to Glorieta Baldy that has a view all the way to Albuquerque and the Espanola valley. There is also an old abandoned fire lookout tower (closed). Pecos river and canyon, Pecos National Historic Park and Monastery Lake are about 8 miles.

The location and tipi itself was absolutely breathtaking! Susanne was so warm and inviting and went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable! I’d highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a different way to camp. There’s even a hiking trail that Susanne marked on her property that we really enjoyed as well as many of her recommended spots. It was a GREAT experience!!
The magic tipi was perfect. It was just what I needed for a solo trip in the southwest. It had a lot of comforts and immediately felt cozy. Susanne, the host, was rad and very helpful. The location was close enough to town (about 20 min) but far enough out to feel secluded. I can’t wait to come stay here again!
Prairie fire tipi
Great little spot set back about 40 yards or so behind the personal residence but still far enough to feel secluded. The tipi was in good condition and the inside was comfortable. The host was onsite and very nice and helpful. She had noted there were electric blankets but we were ok without them turned on over Memorial weekend. Plenty of firewood around to be used and flat spots for tents if need be. I don't think I would really recommend more than 2 people in the tipi although there was futon if you wanted to use it. The open air horse trailer converted into a bathroom / shower / mini kitchen was pretty well done. Overall, it was a nice spot for a night if you are looking for something a little different.
The property and the owner were amazing. The view was so beautiful and peaceful. The owner's attention to detail was immaculate. Our only disappointment was that we didn't get a picture with Scooby..but we met another fine fella..we think his name is Arthur.
Very unique location & setup
Susanne was a great host. We enjoyed visiting the Pecos Wilderness thanks to her suggestion. The tipi was perfect for our stay in Santa Fe. It’s only 20 minutes into town but far enough out to enjoy some relaxation and nature. We didn’t want to leave.
A cozy night stay
Our stay in the tipi was a blast! When my husband and I arrived, the host and her dog showed us around the property. The tipi was filled with all the essentials and the bed was incredibly comfy. It ended up storming the night we stayed, but we felt warm and cozy inside. There's a great hiking trail to the top of the mountain her property is on. It's all clearly marked and easy to navigate. The horse trailer transformed into a bathroom was awesome, and so cleverly done! Seriously, this host was so accommodating and she really went all out when thinking of what to provide for her guests. My husband and I highly recommend staying at her tipi and will be back again!
Loved the tipi!!
Such a great site!! Beautiful location, the tipi was great. Wood was available for the fire pit, the trailer set up for the restroom was Uber clean and close by. Really unique stay and Susanne was an outstanding host. Magical is a perfect description!
