If remote Beauty is what you are after, Hound Dog Homestead also known as HDH, is just the place for you! HDH is 140 acres of true bliss. The views are EPIC! Sunrise and sunset will absolutely blow the mind!!! Sit atop one of the highest mesas in the region and gaze at the breathtaking views of the Zuni Mountains to the south, Tsoodzil Mountain to the east, and the iconic cliffs to the north.
The high altitude mesa, red rock formations, trees, grasses, wildflowers, and abundance of wildlife - mule deer, elk, wild horses, rabbits and birds- make Hound Dog Homestead perfect for the outdoor enthusiast.
Located just 60 miles south of the world heritage of Chaco Canyon, Hound Dog Homestead is rich in the history of the ancestral Puebloan people of the Chaco era. Pottery shards 1000 to 2000 years old are a common sight! Take an easy hike from the cabin to visit a ~1500 year old Chacoan dwelling or gain some elevation and hike to the top of the mesa to visit an ancient fire pit which was likely part of the signal fire network connecting Chaco Canyon to outlying communities.
The 225 sqft cabin is built primarily with re-purposed materials- walls of beautiful wooden windows, 100 year old hardwood flooring, and 200 year old oak barn beams. For music lovers, there is a large collection of classic vinyl and a vintage sound system. A gigantic antique wood stove is sure to keep you warm in the colder months. You sleep well in a comfortable full sized murphy bed, but plan to wake up early for a beautiful sunrise! There is room for one more on the couch or a small air-mattress on the floor.
There is a bathroom consisting of 1 composting toilet. (don't be afraid, its easy to use and you wont smell or see a single thing!) The indoor shower is coming soon, but in the meet time if want a soak, treat yourself to our outdoor wood heated hot tub! It can get SO hot and the views are amazing! (Of note, this is part of another site on the property, the VW Bus Settlement, so this is only available when that site is not occupied at an additional fee. Advance notice is required to ensure sufficient water is on hand.)
Our kitchen includes a propane stove and toaster oven/airfryer combo, and is thoughtfully stocked with the key essentials for a delicious home cooked meal! A small webber grill is also available. there is a small fridge to keep your food and drink chilled. The cabin is powered by a battery bank and a quiet generator. The batteries will be charged when you arrive. Guest staying two days or less will not need the generator unless the toaster oven or television is used. Wifi and a TV equipped with Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are available for some cozy evening watching!
If you can even convince yourself to leave the beauty of the property and comfort of the cabin, there are plenty of great outdoor activities near by -El Malpais, Bluewater State park (excellent fishing), chaco canyon and Mount Taylor (Tsoodzil) being the closest. If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
We loved our stay at the homestead cabin! It's remote but still accessible and the location is beautiful. The cabin and land jut up against a mesa and BLM so there is a lot to explore/hike. The cabin itself is truly amazing. It's off the grid (with a generator) and looks out over the landscape. It almost felt like being in a tree house or fire watch tower. We liked how basic but functional the cabin was and the deck was perfect for stargazing The best part of our stay was how responsive and accommodating Brett was. He provided lots of recommendations for things to do in the area and gave us plenty of peace and quiet but was only a short distance away if we needed him. This is exactly the kind of place I've been looking for in New Mexico and would definitely recommend.
Beautiful high desert homestead
This place was awesome. Super creative little cabin with tons of natural light surrounded by vibrant New Mexico high desert. Brett met us near the gate of the ranch and brought us up, showed us around the cabin, and set us on our own. The bed was clean and warm, the woodstove cozy, couch comfy, and the record selection perfect. You can drive right up to the cabin if you have skills and 4wd, but if not, parking is only 50 yards away and the road in was pretty smooth.
Would definitely come back. Make sure to show up with your own provisions as this place is pretty far back and there isn't a nearby town (we showed up with wine and snacks and were just fine).
Thanks Brett for sharing your space with us!!
