If remote beauty is what you are after, Hound Dog Homestead is the place for you! Our property is 140 acres of true, New Mexico bliss! Perched on the eastern slope of the highest mesa in the area, you will have breathtaking views of the Zuni Mountains to the south, epic sunrises over Tsoodzil Mountain to the east, and iconic red rock cliffs to the north without another structure in sight.
The red rock formations and washes, high desert trees, grasses and wildflowers, and abundance of wildlife - mule deer, elk, wild horses, rabbits and birds- make Hound Dog Homestead perfect for the outdoor enthusiast. You can take a short marked trail to a lookout near the mesa top or explore our 140 acres of hills and washes on your own.
Located just 60 miles south of the world heritage site and national park Chaco Canyon, the area is rich in the history of the ancestral Puebloan people. You will past cliffs studded with petroglyphs on your drive in and will commonly see ancient pottery shards as you hike the washes near the cabin. Stop at the NPS site on highway 19 on your way in for sampling of Chacoan era architectural ruins.
The 225sqft cabin is built primarily with re-purposed materials: walls of beautiful wooden windows, 100 year old hardwood flooring, and 200 year old oak barn beams. For music lovers, there is a large collection of classic vinyl and a vintage sound system. A gigantic antique wood stove is sure to keep you warm in the colder months. You will sleep well in a comfortable full sized murphy bed, but plan to wake up early for a beautiful sunrise! There is room for one more on the couch or a small air-mattress on the floor.
Our kitchen is well equipped for your cooking needs including a propane stove, toaster oven/airfryer combo, dish ware and the key essentials for a delicious home cooked meal! A small webber grill is also available. There is a small fridge to keep your food and drinks chilled. There is a convenient indoor, odor free composting toilet. There is running water and a sink with boundless hot water, but the shower area is still in the works.
The cabin is powered by a battery bank that gets recharged by a quiet generator. The batteries will be charged when you arrive. Guest staying two days or less will not need the generator unless the toaster oven or television is used, in which case there is a convenient on/off remote. Wifi and a TV equipped with Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are available for cozy evening watching!
If you can convince yourself to leave the beauty of the property and comfort of the cabin, there are plenty of great outdoor activities near by including El Malpais, Bluewater State park (excellent fishing), Chaco Canyon and Mount Taylor (Tsoodzil). We loved our stay at the homestead cabin! It's remote but still accessible and the location is beautiful. The cabin and land jut up against a mesa and BLM so there is a lot to explore/hike. The cabin itself is truly amazing. It's off the grid (with a generator) and looks out over the landscape. It almost felt like being in a tree house or fire watch tower. We liked how basic but functional the cabin was and the deck was perfect for stargazing The best part of our stay was how responsive and accommodating Brett was. He provided lots of recommendations for things to do in the area and gave us plenty of peace and quiet but was only a short distance away if we needed him. This is exactly the kind of place I've been looking for in New Mexico and would definitely recommend.
Beautiful high desert homestead
This place was awesome. Super creative little cabin with tons of natural light surrounded by vibrant New Mexico high desert. Brett met us near the gate of the ranch and brought us up, showed us around the cabin, and set us on our own. The bed was clean and warm, the woodstove cozy, couch comfy, and the record selection perfect. You can drive right up to the cabin if you have skills and 4wd, but if not, parking is only 50 yards away and the road in was pretty smooth.
Would definitely come back. Make sure to show up with your own provisions as this place is pretty far back and there isn't a nearby town (we showed up with wine and snacks and were just fine).
Thanks Brett for sharing your space with us!!
