Pitch camp at Gallo Campground, where the searing sun will christen your tent worthy for its desert lands. Tucked among fallen boulders and cliffs, Gallo Campground has the unique positioning of being near ancient petroglyphs and inscriptions. You'll truly feel one with the earth as the desert winds bluster around you. Come prepared with all necessary supplies, as this is a beautifully remote area.

Great campground. Sites vary widely. Avoid #38 as it's on the parking lot. Flush toilets. Potable water available at nearby visitors center.

Book in advance! It's a long drive out on a dirt road (about 15 miles) before you reach the campsite. VERY limited shade, but beautiful

Chaco Culture National Historic Park, containing remnants of a massive ancient (850 – 1250 A.D.) civilization, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Dark Sky Park. We viewed amazing night skies, including the Milky Way, and spent the next day exploring the Chacoan pueblo remains. The Chacoans are known for their pre-planned and advanced building techniques. Their structures were often oriented in the director of solar, lunar, or other astrological events.

Cliff dwellings were situated directly behind our campsite.Milky Way view from our campsite at Chaco Culture NHP and IDSP.Petroglyphs.

While one of the two bathroom structures is under construction, there are no reserved sites. Best availability is at 11:00 checkout. We were there mid week in May. All RV sites were taken by 1:30. Go to the campground first, pick your site and then go to the visitor center to pay the fee.
