Campsites are only accessible by either 4x4 vehicle (with 10 inches+ ground clearance), ATV or a 45 minute hike in.  Please call us for more info on the "road".  Please DO NOT try to drive a normal car up our "road" as you will scrape bottom and likely get stuck.

This listing is for staying in our A-Frame (3 season) semi-permanent large canvas tent.  This is generally recommended for camping May-September but can be available year round to adventurous campers seeking sub-zero sleeping conditions!  Tent pads and fire ring are very close to the A-frame.

Please read the entire listing before booking and before contacting us with any questions.  Thanks!

We have no plumbing anywhere on the property so no bathroom or shower, just a composting outhouse about 300 feet from the A-Frame.  During summer months we have an outdoor rainwater sink and gravity feed cold shower.  Visitors are also welcome to fire up the outdoor fire heated clawfoot bathtub if they'd like.  Drinking water can be brought in or hauled from a Spring on the property.

We are a working off-grid Permaculture homestead.  We own 60 acres with about 4 or 5 acres somewhat cleared/developed.  We are completely surrounded by wooded wilderness including a huge amount of public land and our nearest neighbors are a mile and a half away.  We are two miles from a good county road so we have practically no traffic in our immediate area.  The Superior Hiking Trail is just over 1 mile away and Crosby Manitou State Park (with many hiking trails) is just over two miles away.  There are lots of other ATV and snowmobile trails very close by.  Lake Superior shores are 5 miles as the crow flies but 15 miles by road which is about a half hour drive.  Grand Marais is a little over an hour away, Silver Bay is 40 minutes.

Although there is technically "drive up access", getting to our homestead/campsites is a serious off-road adventure!  We live 2 miles up an old logging trail.  It is passable by 4wd truck with decent clearance, ATV or off-road vehicle.  Most smaller SUV's might not be able to make it all the way.  If you have a normal car and/or would like to hike from the bottom, it is a 45 minute hike up and there is plenty of parking at the bottom (2 miles away from campsites/homestead).

Steven and his family were very hospitable, showing us around their property and welcoming us to hang around any of it, including a spring, garden, fire pit, teepee, etc. The A-frame was a short walk behind their home in a less-wooded, more open area. They are working towards a self-sustaining lifestyle on their property.

The A-frame was as you would expect for an outdoor camping stay - do not expect a clean, indoor facility. It is not bug proof, however, bugs were hardly an issue and a bugnet was put up for us.

The 2 mile drive in was doable on a *dry* day by a Subaru outback. Ask Steven for more details, but this could be a hike in if it has rained recently or you don't have a high-clearance vehicle.
