Peaceful Retreat on the Patuxent
Just enjoyed a wonderful long weekend retreat at the Kitts Marsh River Rental! It was a spectacular fall weekend, and I thoroughly enjoyed the solitude and beauty of the site. Everything was as noted on the website (i.e., they provided great info and there were no surprises). They even provided plenty in the way of sanitizing gels and wipes, which was greatly appreciated. The host, Marilyn, was delightful to work with! The sounds of the light river waves lapping at shore lulled me to sleep at night, and the sunsets and sunrises were gobsmacking gorgeous. From beginning to end, it was an awesome experience. This was my first time using Hipcamp, and my first time at the Kitts Marsh River Rental. I plan to return to both as soon as I can!

Stunning and Secluded!
What a unique, secluded and gorgeous site! The cabin is so private and the attached pier with kayaks is unbeatable. I couldn't recommend Marilyn and her beautiful location more :)

Beautiful And Private
We stayed at the shanty for my son’s first birthday and had so much. The privacy is absolutely unreal, we could have stayed at the shanty and not have seen another soul the entire weekend!! We chose to do some local hiking, the area is beautiful. The shanty itself is basic, but has what you need. There was a microwave, mini fridge, toaster, and coffee maker inside, and a nice charcoal grill outside. Fishing and kayaking gear was readily available. We did have to be careful with our son on the beach, as jellyfish were plentiful - but we had no problem spotting them. The composting toilet inside was out of order, so a walk to the ports potty was necessary. This didn’t bother us, but if you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night - just be aware that it’s a bit of a walk. The shanty can get hot, but there are ceiling fans to try to keep it cool. Marilyn was an outstanding host. We didn’t get a chance to meet her (darn you Covid!), but she was very accessible by phone. She left some fresh blackberries for us and had opened all the windows before we arrived. A tree had fallen at one point, preventing us from accessing the shanty, but Marilyn and her husband were quick to help. Overall our stay was fantastic, we’re already considering a return visit!

Secluded Getaway Close to DC
The River Shanty provided a lovely retreat from DC. We appreciated that it was secluded, so it was easy to social distance (given COVID). The cabin has comfy beds and electricity, but no running water. Marilyn provided Sun Shower bags (we filled them at the garden) which came in handy to help us cool off. Note that if there is something you need for cooking/eating that you should bring it yourself (e.g. coffee mugs, cooking knives, plates, bowls, etc.). There are basic appliances available. We enjoyed spending time there looking out at the water. It was so peaceful and beautiful!

You’ll love it
This site is as beautiful and serene as it looks in the pictures. The hosts are very friendly. Located just over an hour from DC it is within easy reach for a weekend retreat. The soothing ripples of the Patuxent and the sound of the waves lapping on the shore just a few steps from the door will soothe away any mental clutter that isn’t sparking joy.

Serene & peaceful getaway for the weekend! We saw the most vibrant full rainbow our first night, and the rest of our time there was just as magical; star gazing from the pier, tons of fireflies at night, and amazing sunsets. We swam, fished, kayaked, grilled, all the good stuff! Pleasantly rustic, but not too rustic for my teenage daughters.
