Transport to Matinicus Island 22 miles offshore is via plane or via private boat.  The flight out takes just 10 minutes from Owl's Head on the mainland.  The boat trip is one hour from Rockland harbor.  Prices are the same fly or boat.  Guests make their own transport arrangements.  Flights are daily, anytime,  the boat has a schedule on Saturdays and Sundays.  Find them via a search for information, or ask us.  The Maine State Ferry makes just 4 trips a month way out to Matinicus, a 2 1/4 hour slow ride, perhaps their dates will fit your schedule.

For over 35 years, we've hosted people who want to see offshore island life as it is. Matinicus is a fishing outpost on the most offshore island in Maine, 22 miles out to sea from Rockland, Maine. We have two separate camps (a Maine term, which is called a cottage anyplace else) directly on the ocean and next to a broad sand beach, each with 3 interior bedrooms and outside space to pitch a tent if you want.

Matinicus is a downeast and down-to-earth community, with a local bakery, endless lobster, music on the dock, an island church, sand beaches, and a remote, off-the-beaten-track feeling.  It could be "one of the last places on the Northeast coast where the old downeast lifestyle survives intact" (Boston Globe). You are on your own at Matinicus, in a setting where the ocean can soothe or awe.  Matinicus has many remote beaches filled with drift items, sand beaches where you will be alone.

The cottages are private, rustic, and offer complete facilities, as well as kitchen and bedroom furnishing, EXCEPT sheets and towels. On our Matinicus camp, you can watch the ocean, hike, bike, sunbathe, swim, plan meals, and explore all over the island.   Our island summers are short, intense, and in some demand for an experience that is hard to find elsewhere.   It is NOT for EVERYBODY, so pick a group who want remote and off-the-beaten-track locations, and away from the commercial summer scene.
