Best in Maine: 1st place
Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2023.
A beautiful island campground thickly forested with spruce, fir, and birch, Four Acre Woods was created over 60 years ago on Sunshine Island, Maine. Under the name Sunshine Campground, it hosted people from all over the world and delivered the spirit and essence of this ancient, abundant land that so many ancestors had roamed and celebrated before. It was open to the public through to the 90s, but then sat alone for 15 years, waiting for someone to revive it and bring it back to the world. Then one day, Caleb and Wolf met on a bus, heading south from Down East Maine, where they instantly connected and joined forces. They worked together redressing a home in Stonington for visitors to experience and became brothers while doing so. Eventually, the presence and opportunity of the campground caught their attention and after working out the technicalities, they worked together to bring this beautiful land and campground back to the people under its new life and name, Four Acre Woods. After opening on July 1st 2020, the land is finally back to sharing all of her beauty and spirit with the people. So, Welcome Home. Sincerely, - Four Acre Woods Caretakers

Loch Ness Lake (RV 30amp)
Excellent spot, lots of firewood and amenities. The best part is how close you are to a wonderful sunrise overlook!

Moose Forest (20amp Hookup)
Not as advertised
Very tight, small sights with no privacy and incredibly loud! Only plus was hot shower and free firewood.

Octopus Coral (Tent/Primitive)
It was a beautiful and convenient space. The bathrooms & shower was nice to have to wash off. It was a bit frustrating not to have access to the wifi though

Family of four - great stay
It was a cute little spot on a very quiet island. If you’re looking for a non touristy spot to do some hikes this place, in October is perfect for that!! There’s no where to eat in the island so if you’re wanting an easy meal option this isn’t for you! We were glad to not have that option bc it forced us to use the food we packed!! And we saved money. As for the campground: The campground is cute. The sites are close together but most campgrounds are. The sites are in the small side but we fit our large truck and very large tent on it just fine. There was plenty of fire wood and great bathrooms! They also have a super neat community place where we heated water to do dishes while our kids looked at all the collectibles the room had. We would for sure go back here!

Raccoon Hollow (20amp Hookup)
The perfect Maine experience!
Amazing experience! This little oasis in the woods made us feel like we were in an old school sleepaway camp in the best way possible- it was such a cute, private community with like-minded nature lovers. Such thoughtful ammenities provided, we had nice warm showers and slept so peacefully under the starry sky. It was safe and all we could ask for on our journey to Acadia. We stayed in our 4x4 Sprinter with our dog. Family safe! Lots of happy children / people and pets! Absolutely a must stay while you are in Maine.

Loch Ness Lake (RV 30amp)
Great, cute little campground! We loved the hot, clean showers, community cabin and the overall layout. The community cabin has everything you need in case you forget something. You can tell Caleb put a lot of thought into this campground and it is very well taken care of. Would highly recommend!
