Nice, level, well-cleared, shady campsite and cute and functional outdoor kitchen and composting outhouse set up. The road to the campsites is in great shape and it’s close to 101. so very easy access. I stayed one night on my road trip and was very comfortable.

My kids an I enjoyed having this as our home base for our adventures. The kitchen was decently stocked and anything we needed (even a pad when my air mattress gave out!) was taken care of right away. The land is beautiful and well kept and my boys enjoyed running around with the chickens and cats. Several fruit trees on the property and we made stewed apples from them. There were games and a cute little stereo with some good music to play the helped set the vibe. Out door showers were basic but the hot water was enough for my family of four and I really enjoyed my shower as the sun set. Hosts were very kind and accomodating and I look forward to putting this place on our map next summer. Close to the eel river and town is just 3 minutes away.

This was a wonderful stay! We booked this site last minute while on a road trip, and Hillary and her partner were very kind. The property is so thoughtfully decorated and put together, and the whimsical vibes were awesome. I would definitely stay her again and recommend it to a friend!

Camping here was a great time! The compost able toilet was decorated so cute and had no smell. The kitchen made cooking while camping significantly easier and the sink with hot water was a blessing. Site was so well kept and quiet. Would stay here again. Fresh eggs were so yummy as well as the fruits on the trees (Pears and apples)!

The best campsite, it feels like home in a storybook way. Amazing hosts and lovely animals, the outdoor kitchen was my favorite, if you are a chef, it is hard not to go into test kitchen mode. The area is beautiful!

A Bit of Good Luck in Laytonville

This is an absolutely fantastic place to camp! I arrived on a hot summer day and the shade of the trees was a welcome relief. And then, true to the climate, it cooled down beautifully and I had a great sleep. Grounds are gorgeous and the facilities just exactly what I was looking for. I would’ve liked to have stayed longer and enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and generally hanging out in the common area. I just had too much driving ahead of me to do so. Hillary was very welcoming and communicated well. Like I was, you will be lucky to stay in any of the campsites; absolutely recommend.

Arrival was smooth and easy - pretty autonomous which is nice. The property is well maintained and reflects an artist spirit. We loved the decor in the outhouse, the simple touches at the outdoor shower area, and most of all the studio with ceramics and trinkets. There were fresh blackberries lining the path to our campsite and a beautiful apple tree. Though we didn’t use the outdoor kitchen, it was clean, tidy, and conveniently stocked with some supplies, a fridge, a sink, and neat antiques. We would definitely stay here again!

Easy last min reservation, loved the wooded space as respite from the warm weather, no light pollution at my camp which was lovely, didn’t use all the facilities but it all seemed well setup and accessible. Easy communication with host as well. 10/10 Would recommend.

Beautiful, peaceful setting, with lots of privacy between the sites. The human waste composting toilets really didn't smell at all! However, it ran out of toilet paper and there were no backup rolls anywhere. Also, be warned that there are no hookups and only eco-safe products (e.g., soap, shampoo, etc.) are allowed in the community shower. So plan ahead!

Wonderful campout with friends

Lucky Penny is a very special place. I left a review for one of our other campsites that will explain lots. There are so many perks to this place: outdoor showers, compostable toilet/outhouses, a wonderful outdoor kitchen, nice sized campsites with picnic tables and firepits, artistically presented kitchen, outhouses, decor and it is quiet! Such a beautiful spot if you want to spend a little extra and get away from traditional campgrounds. Highly recommend.

Quiet camping on beautiful land

We loved Lucky Penny! The sites are big enough for 2 familes, we were able to have campfires (safety first!), enjoy the quiet away from typical campground noise and loved walking to the outdoor kitchen to cook with friends. There were blackberries and apples to pick from the land, which was a treat. The outdoor kitchen is mostly stocked, but limited if you have other groups also cooking in the space. I'd suggest asking ahead of your arrival to see if they have all you need. Hillary was a great host, kind and generous. She communicated well and promptly especially when we were on site. She also attended to our needs when necessary. We had a wagon to carry all our cooking food from camp to the kitchen, which I highly recommend (optional). The host also gave us great advice on places to go swim at the river. The outhouses have compostable toilets, decorated and do not smell at all. This place is a gem.

This place is awesome!! Host was super responsive and they had coffee out in the mornings. The property is super wooded so it feels like the middle of no where with a town right next to it with all the basic necessities. Super cute with the outdoor kitchen and showers. This is a really good bonus swimming spot called Hole in the Wall which is super fun to go to and is about 20 minutes away from the site. Would stay again!

Site was clean, level and fire pit was clean. Water to put out fire handy. Smaller buckets to plunge into fire water containers would be good. Hot showers were delightful. Since cell coverage is spotty in area be sure to download directions/ address in advance. Address for madrone rd was hard to see - suggest posting the Hipcamp sign with symbol prominently at corner. Nice to find a long, paved walking path on Branscomb right near entrance to Hipcamp.

We love coming to Lucky Penny, it is an idyllic place that has all we need to relax and spend family time together. This is the second summer we have camped at Lucky Penny and we really took advantage of the outdoor kitchen this time. We also enjoyed swimming in a nearby swimming hole that Hillary told us about. The Lucky Penny is a home away from home for us, and we are hoping to get back for another night or two again later this summer. We also really enjoy the outdoor shower. Hillary and her family are generous and gracious hosts, and make us feel very welcome. Highly recommend!

We had a great time, lots of wood around for a fire, the communal kitchen is useful with a working refrigerator. The host was great and even left us flowers. Site #5 was big enough for three tents.

The host was very responsive on the app and helped make sure my crew got to the campsite easily. They said the spot was great and very peaceful. we will likely be staying again soon when we do more field work in the area! overall great and easy experience and a lovely campground. would recommend to others!
