Photographer Spotlight: Nic Castellanos

There is something incredibly fascinating about capturing a moment in time and sharing it with others.

As someone, who by nature, is fast-paced, impatient, and restless, photography has forced me to slow down and to look at things in a different way. With photography being such a personal pursuit for me, I have found the hardest part about this craft is sharing my work. I have never sold a print, I don’t advertise for work, and I hardly ever share my work via social media.

I figure that putting this to print could inspire me to do a better job of sharing, as I believe there is a deeper level of joy to be found if I can share my own visions of beauty with others. If anyone has tips of what I can do to get more of my work out there please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Photography Breakdown

FIELD SCOUT SINCE: The beginning! My first assignment was late August of 2015.

COMPLETED FIELD SCOUT TRIPS TO DATE: 11

WHERE HE SHOOTS: California

WHAT’S IN HIS BAG: Canon 6D, Canon 5D “Classic”, 200l, 85 1.4, 35L, tripod, ND filters, batteries and memory cards galore, snacks, notes, other odds and ends.

HIS STYLE: Shallow DoF, single subject isolation, detail oriented.

PHOTO HACK: Shooting raw for white balance issues. As a self-taught photographer I spent wayyyyy too much time using the color balance sliders to correct white balance due to me shooting in Jpeg format. Understanding RAW files and how to use them have been extremely beneficial for me. It is comical how long it took me to shoot in RAW.

Yuba Yurt, RiverSea East

I loved that there was a bath with running hot water on the property. My wife thought I was crazy when I changed into my birthday suit during the pouring rain and jumped in, but I knew I would regret it if I didn’t give it a go.

Sacred Rock, Estero Americano Wonderland

This was a brand new area that no one had camped at before and upon waking up the area was completely fogged in. I decided to perform my due diligence and set up a site that I thought would excellent with some good, morning sun. I sat atop a hill and watched the sun slowly eat through the fog and I ended up with some brilliant light to highlight the beauty of this site.

Olive Grove, Soul Food Farm

This shot just reminds me that this is how my journey started with Hipcamp. My wife was two weeks before her due date and this was our last memory/event before having a child together, so are a lot of fond memories that are associated with this picture.
