The sights and sounds of working farms are drawing visitors to the bush and farmers across regional New South Wales are opening their gates to welcome them.
Farmers across New South Wales (NSW) are opening new agritourism experiences to welcome visitors to their land and to share their way of life. Changes to the NSW planning system, introduced in December 2022, have seen over 100 new farm stays open for bookings through Hipcamp.
These new farms are on average 350 acres in size and usually offer as little as two campsites. They offer a new style of camping that celebrates the land and connects campers with the people that depend on the land.
Tom Harris, a farmer from Sleepy Hollow Manor Estate on the NSW Far North Coast, has seen over 200 bookings as campers reserve their site next to the clear running water of Platypus Creek and his family’s prized cattle.
“I love camping and I love this property, what a great opportunity to share it with people that do the same.” -Tom from Sleepy Hollow Manor Estate, Sleepy Hollow, NSW
Hipcamp is creating new revenue for working farms; revenue to reinvest in the land and help keep these working lands working.
Over $100,000 has been earned by these 100 new farm stays in the past 3 months. That’s new money to fix fences, replant creeks and waterways, and build long-term resilience. It also has flow-on benefits for the surrounding regional communities.
Creating new places to stay outside drives tourism dollars further into rural communities. As much as $400 per visit is spent by campers in the local community. This money flows to rural businesses and supports jobs.
Farm stays such as paddock camping, caravan and RV sites, and cabins with rustic charm are taking bookings across NSW. Discover and book your next farm stay here.
In 2022, NSW made changes to the planning system that made it easier to start an agritourism business like a farm stay. These changes make it possible for large working farms to welcome up to 20 paying guests. Find out more about the changes here.
Landowners across Australia are partnering with Hipcamp to earn extra money by connecting their properties with people looking to go camping. Hipcamp offers landowners the tools they need to start a farm stay or camping business on their land.
