5 DIY Photo Accessories for Under $5

Whether you’re pressed for space or cash, camera accessories sometimes aren’t given the priority they deserve when planning a big photo trip. Here are five creative DIY add-ons to enhance your photos without breaking the bank or your back.

1. DIY Ziplock Waterproofer

Rain wasn’t in the forecast while you planned your trip? Not a problem. Camera covers are awesome but they can cost around $50, so opt for this simple Ziplock-and-rubber-band solution if you’re on a budget. Your camera will stay dry even if you don’t.

2. DIY Camera Filters

You’d be surprised at how easy it is to add ‘Gram-like filters without the app. Want to tint the color of your image? Yank your sunglasses off your head and put them in front of your lens. You can also use sheer fabric or colored plastic wrap (like those found on pre-packed foods) to change the color or warmth of your photo. Hello, Valencia!

3. DIY Rice Tripod

There aren’t a ton of level surfaces in the wild, which can make long-exposure shots tricky if you don’t have a tripod. Next time, bring a bag of rice to rest your camera on—deliciously utilitarian. Too much weight? Fill your dry sack or a pillow case with other bagged food, like oats or dehydrated meals, and extra layers.

4. DIY Coffee Cup Lens Hood

As a photographer, you probably have a love-hate relationship with the sun. Keep things friendly with a coffee cup hood for your lens, which will block harsh rays and help you get that bluebird shot you’ll be gazing at for months.

5. DIY Leather Camera Strap

From Almost Makes Perfect

The best part of this strap is that it’s no-sew and takes about 10 minutes to make!
