For Outdoors Lovers: Romantic UK Retreats for Valentine’s Day

Forget the rings and roses, glamping is the perfect Valentine’s surprise treat.

It’s that time of year when two simple words strike fear into the stony hearts of those without a natural tendency towards romance. Valentine’s Day. But fear not, Hipcamp has it covered.

This year, why not forget all that predictable stuff—the chocolates, the roses, the handcuffs—and whisk the love of your life away on a romantic break they’ll never forget. What could be more memorable than strolling hand-in-hand through magical woodlands or skinny-dipping on your very own deserted beach? And because it’s still a wee bit chilly (yes, maybe forget the skinny dipping) you can spend your Valentine’s night cuddled up together by the log burner.

We’ve compiled a list of the finest romantic glamping retreats from across the UK, all of which are sure to score you some serious brownie points with your other half. And if your partner doesn’t appreciate the great outdoors on this special day, perhaps they’re not your perfect match, after all? Just saying…

Snowdonia Glamping Holidays

Betws-y-Coed, Conwy, Wales

If your partner doesn’t share your love of traditional camping then Valentine’s in a tent might not be the greatest idea. However, even the most reluctant camper can’t fail to be tempted by a night in one of these luxurious shepherds huts. Inside, there’s a lambs wool mattress, feather duvet and pillows, traditional Welsh blankets and a wood burning stove to cuddle up in front of. The two huts—”the living one” and “the washing one”—are yours exclusively. So is the sauna and kitchen. Hampers for glampers can also be arranged, boasting the finest Welsh produce.

Glamping Bothie

Meikle Wartle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

This cute little bothie is tucked behind a walled garden in the grounds of the 12th-century Wardhill Castle. And while it has the romance and seclusion of your typical hikers’ hideaway, it’s rather more comfortable than any you’re likely to have encountered in the past. Its open plan living area offers a log burner, an antique double bed and a Victorian free-standing bath – alongside all the practical things you’ll need. Outside, you’re surrounded by nature and can enjoy woodland walks through the estate’s 400 acres.

Kingfisher Lakes Glamping and Lodges

Driffield, East Yorkshire, England

There are 10 glamping options at Kingfisher Lakes but its Willow Lodge or Sunset Lodge log cabins you should set your sights on if you’re looking for a romantic stay. Each of these two-person hideaways on the lake has a secluded location with an outlook over the water to the west. You don’t have to be a geography teacher to realise that means a view of the setting sun. Enjoy it from either the steamy waters of your private wood-fired hot tub or, with Champagne in hand, from the lakeside deck. Inside, twinkling fairy lights and other thoughtful touches make the cosy open-plan living space more romantic still.

Little Fleece at Folly Farm

Newbury, Berkshire, England

With a log burner, a wood-fire warmed outdoor bath tub, a fire pit and a pizza oven – the lone shepherd’s hut at Folly Farm is heart-warming stuff. Book a stay for your Valentine and we reckon they won’t be able to help falling for its charms. It’s a relaxing spot in a farm setting and you might be happy to hide away here for the duration of your stay – but there’s always the option of a walk. Choose a hike on the nearby Ridgeway National Trail or the mile-long meander to local pub, The Harrow, where dinner for two might be the icing on the cake of your romantic getaway.

Dittisham Hideaway

Dittisham, Devon, England

If you fancy your own little love nest, how about booking one of the treehouses at Dittisham Hideaway in Devon? Elevated among the canopy you can hang out in a hammock or hot tub while enjoying the view. Technically the tree houses sleep five so if it’s a cosier getaway you’re after, try the site’s gleaming vintage Airstream instead. Oh-so-cool and oh-so shiny, it is kitted out for two to sleep in comfort and style and, fear not, its outside space is just as well appointed. There’s a hammock, a Japanese spa bath and far-reaching views of Dartmoor’s rolling hills.
