With Mother’s Day coming up on May 14th, we wanted to learn more about your relationship to motherhood and the outdoors. If you’re a mom who loves the outdoors, or if you have a maternal figure in your life who has helped you love the outdoors, please share a picture to Instagram and tag @hipcamp (in the caption and on the photo) and #adventuremom. Best picture + caption will receive $100 in Hipcamp credit this Mother’s Day!
As one of Hipcamp’s mothers once wrote, Everyone has a Mother: Mother Nature. While we love to give thanks to Mother Nature and all she has given us every day, we also want to do the same for our human mothers—all the strong women in our lives who have raised us, loved us unconditionally, and taught us our own strength.
We’ve rounded up some of the best #adventuremoms #campmoms and #outdoormoms we could find. Whether you’re looking for tips on how to camp with your kids, want some really cute baby pics to pop up on your newsfeed, or most importantly want to follow some seriously badass chicks, throw these women a follow!
Leann and her cheeky tot, Birdie, are very close to the Hipcamp heart. Leann’s husband, Nic Castellanos (@niccastellanos) is one of our phenomenal Field Scouts, so you may recognize these two beauties from some of our listings! Leann and Nic are so badass they took Bird on her first camping trip when she was one-month old (at a Hipcamp site!). With parents as loving, creative and fun as these, Birdie is pretty much destined to grow up an adventurer.
If you know anything about climbing, Beth Rodden is no doubt a household name. At age 14, Beth was the youngest woman to climb a 5.14a and to this date is one of the only women in the world to have redpointed a 5.14c trad climb. That’s a lot of climber speak, but if you don’t know anything about the sport, we’ll tell you this: Beth is one grade-a badass human. In addition to her numerous notable ascents, Beth and four other climbers were once held hostage by militant rebels in a cave in Kyrgyzstan and escaped to tell the story. That’s an adventure movie in the making, no doubt.
In 2014, Beth opened up another chapter of her life when she gave birth to Theo. Theo, Beth and her husband Randy Puro live near Yosemite now, because where the heck else would they live?!
Morgan Bechler is one adventurous and talented chick. Over the past year, she’s teamed up with @gopro, @forrestmankins, Merrel and a bunch of other rad creatives and brands to share her solo adventures as well as the good times with her little nugget Hadlie. At some point in life, most of us feel that restless, wanderlust calling. Morgan followed it. After trying out a nomadic lifestyle for some time, she realized it just wasn’t for her—she longs for the space, structure and comfort of something more rooted:
“We must recognize our true selves and honor that we shift, make changes and shed what doesn’t truly belong.”
She’s now preparing to move to Colorado. We’re now looking forward to more of the (extended) “weekend” adventures to come!
Brooke is definitely getting the most out of her life in Salt Lake City, Utah. She hikes, mountain bikes, skis (in a bikini, no less) and also has a cute little blondie boy, Huck, who comes along too (he’s hidden in that snow stroller right now). It doesn’t hurt she also has an adorable puppy who sometimes makes it into the shots!
Giddi’s feed has all the ingredients to a superb #vanlife account (a tricked out vehicle and tall, dark and longhaired husband, what else do you really need?). The extra cargo they’re riding with is a cutie-pa-tootie baby girl who loves to model whether she knows it or not. Giddi is also dedicated to reducing waste and green livin’ and gives lots of tips on that.
“What will you do with one special life?” Shannon asks in her Instagram bio. Shannon keeps busy sacking peaks in the Sierras with little ones in tow.
“This truly is what I live for. The days when my little kin and I can go roam and wander through the mountains, push through limits, experience growth and celebrate our Mother Earth.”
Shannon teamed up with @bornwildproject, a company that hopes to connect families with wilderness and wildness, which is also worth the follow.
A Hawaii transplant living in Utah, Sachi and her “tribe of Wildlings” are making their way all across the Continental U.S. Right now she and her family are in Seattle. Her little one, Penny, has been fighting cancer with the help of Seattle Children’s Hospital. Sachi keeps it honest, heart-felt and real. Send them all your love and strength, especially this Mother’s Day.
Southern California, meet your adventure family of the year. Mariela is mama to two wild boys who are lucky enough to travel around all the best California spots with Mariela and her husband, Diego (@climberswithkids). Mariela shared that she didn’t grow up hiking or camping. She started rock climbing and getting outside at 17 after being inspired by to a few girl camps which she was younger (#girlpower):
“Before becoming a mother I feared that having children would stop me from going outside and doing hobbies that I loved, but boy was I wrong… I actually feel that having kids has made me spend way more time outside than before. One thing in particular is connecting with other Mom’s who love being outside as much as I do.”
Roxanna is a professional photographer, adventure junkie and mama to four (five if you include their new pup, Dr. Pepper). Luckily for this family, they live in the Canadian PNW and are just a stones throw away from pretty much any outdoor activity you can imagine. Chances are you’ve seen some of Roxanna’s photography—she works with brands like Mercedes Benz, Oru, Keen, Superfeet, Osprey, and GoPro…just to name a few.
Tanya is another adventure mama living in Canada who’s teamed up with GoPro to inspire the next generation of adventurers, campers, nature lovers, and conservationists. Her little boy Kade has already caught the bug!
“Literally at 7:30 am every morning for the last week, Kade has been grabbing my hand and leading me to the door to go outside…7:30am ? I’d say a little someone is definitely feeling the Spring vibes!”

Now more than ever, it’s important to appreciate the time we get to spend outdoors and care for our environment.…
