Walnut Farm

Just five minutes from the market town of Bridport and a little further from West Bay on the Jurassic Coast, Walnut Farm is home to just two yurts. Each sleeps two and is luxuriously furnished with a king-size bed. Although it’s not far from the sights, it’s great for secluded stays as each yurt is situated in its own little paddock and has a private en-suite bathroom. Bedding and towels are provided and there are even bedside sockets for charging your mobile phone – should you decide to keep it on. Campfires are allowed and the shared area, a stroll through the surrounding orchard away, includes an equipped kitchen yurt, a wood-fired pizza oven and a hot tub.

Caalm Camp

Family-run and family-friendly, Caalm Camp is a neat yurt glamping site on a working farm with a reputation for spotlessly clean facilities. There are six yurts and each is big enough to sleep up to six people – in proper beds with crisp, clean sheets. A little network of paved paths connect the tents and the shared facilities in the converted hay barn which include a fully-equipped kitchen with a fridge per yurt and a wet room each too. Kids will love the wooden play area and the farm location which means there’s a chance to meet and even feed the animals.

Bloomfield Camping

There are just five yurts in seven sprawling acres at Bloomfield Camping, which means plenty of space for the handful of lucky glampers who will share this east Dorset site at any one time. The yurts are off grid and surrounded by nature with young fruit trees and shrubbery providing shelter and screening. Each yurt sits on its own timber deck and is fully-furnished with a double bed and two single futons. Outside there’s an outdoor, equipped kitchen shelter and a fire pit for campfire cooking. The trees and on-site ponds are designed to encourage wildlife and you might be lucky enough to spot deer as well as the ducks and peacocks who are more permanent residents.

Stock Gaylard

If you fancy yurt glamping as a group, head for Stock Gaylard. This country estate and deer park in the north Dorset countryside, offers two little yurt encampments. Each is available for exclusive hire with three sleeping yurts and a living yurt making up the set. Each area also has its own facilities including an “under-the-stars” bath. These unique yurts, designed and built locally, have handcrafted furniture, and comfy beds for between two and five people. Each camp area has a campfire and is at least five minutes’ walk from other glampers.

Farrs Meadow

Farrs Meadow is the place for good old-fashioned, Tom Sawyer-ish summer camping with campfires, hooting owls, den building and wild swimming in the nearby River Stour. It’s a mixed site with pitches for campers, gypsy wagons, shepherd’s huts and, of course, yurts. There are three in the site’s upper meadow which offers lovely views over the Dorset countryside close to the pretty town of Wimborne. Facilities are shared and fairly rustic with long-drop loos and showers in little horsebox bathrooms but the yurts are comfy and cosy. Each has a double bed which includes bedding and two single camp beds for which you’ll need to bring your own.

Crafty Camping

It’s adults-only at Crafty Camping in West Dorset, 12 miles inland of Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast. But, close as it is, you may find it hard to drag yourself away from this woodland hideaway, which has been hewn out of the wood itself. There are two beautifully-crafted yurts among the handful of glamping options on site. Book in and lie back on the handmade, made-up bed and you’ll soon be marvelling at the latticework walls. You have a private toilet and “tree shower”, use of a safari-style outdoor kitchen complete with range cooker and pizza oven and access to two more yurts – one a communal space with local info, the other an unusual yurt sauna!

Green Valley Yurts

Nestled in the heart of Cerne Valley, not too far from Dorset’s famous chalky giant outlined on the hill, is where you’ll find Green Valley Yurts. It’s an idyllic farm-based site with walks out into the hills and a stream to splash about in. Choose from a small Dorset-made yurt, which sleeps up to four, and a bigger Mongolian-made yurt, sleeping between five and seven people. All of them have a log burner inside and a fire pit outside which you can keep stoked with sustainable, locally-sourced logs. Lights and facilities use solar power, loos are low-flush and there’s organic produce sold in the on-site farm shop and vegan cafe.
