We analyzed 471,662 Hipcamp reviews from the last two years and ranked eligible listings (those with 50+ reviews) using a smart ‘Relative Romance Rating’—a per-review score based on romance-related language.

Methodology

The dataset

• We analyzed 471,662 reviews left on Hipcamp over the last two years.
• For this US ranking, we included listings with at least 50 reviews in that period (to avoid a tiny number of reviews skewing results).
• The analysis covered everything on Hipcamp—from classic campsites and RV spots to cabins and glamping sites.

How reviews were scored (weighted keywords)

Each review was scanned for romance-related keywords and assigned points:

• 5 points (high signal): Words that strongly indicate romance intent (e.g., anniversary, honeymoon, proposal, romantic). 
• 2 points (medium signal): Comfort, privacy, and amenity terms (e.g., cozy, private, hot tub, adults only/no kids). 
• 1 point (low signal): Ambience terms (e.g., stargazing, sunset, stars).

Guardrails

Low-signal terms only counted for a listing when medium- or high-signal terms also appeared for that same listing—so a property didn’t rise in the ranks just because guests mentioned a nice sunset. 

Relative Romance Rating (RRR)

To avoid larger properties dominating based on volume alone, we ranked by a per-review measure:

• RRR = total weighted points ÷ total reviews for that listing 
• RRR is rounded to two decimal places in the final ranking. 

A simple note on limitations

This approach captures how guests describe their stays in reviews. It won’t catch every romantic trip, and some ambience terms can be used in non-romantic contexts, hence the weighting and the low-signal guardrail.
