100+ Best Campfire Songs, According to Spotify Users

Birdsong, flowing rivers, and rustling winds.

While nature’s soundtrack is one of true harmony, listening to music while exploring the great outdoors can make the experience even more enjoyable.

We appreciate that camping is about unplugging from the hustle and bustle of the grind but, whether it’s cruising in a campervan with friends or having a sing along around the campfire with marshmallows, there are certain times when a few tunes only add to the experience.

But what, we wondered, are the best campfire songs? Do you need to strum an acoustic guitar for true folk song fireside vibes? Or do people prefer pop or perhaps a few ’80s classics?

Inspired, we decided to have a root around Spotify and study exactly which songs people are listening to when they take a camping holiday. And, with a list of over 41,000 songs across 500 different camping playlists, we really have delved into the catalogue to determine the most popular tracks that go beyond Home on the Range and Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire.

Taking the top spot among camp songs is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s absolute classic, Sweet Home Alabama. The country favourite may just be the perfect song, featured on 63 of the 500 playlists analysed! One, two, three, turn it up and sing along…

So, whether you’ve got a hardcore adventure planned for your next camping trip or you’re just camping out back on a particularly starry night, we’ve put together the ultimate camping playlist based on our findings.

The Most Popular Campfire Songs

When it comes to pitching a tent, kicking back and cranking up the music, it appears that those spending a night under canvas enjoy listening to feel-good songs. A strong country thread also runs through the top 10, with the genre taking all three top spots among classic campfire songs.

The Most Popular Artists To Listen To When Camping

And when it comes to artists, Canadian alternative rock duo LEN is featured 364 times across the 500 campfire playlists. Funnily enough, their most well-known track, Steal my Sunshine, is something that pretty much all campers dread!

Methodology

We scraped 500 playlists, created by both users and by Spotify itself, that had the word ‘camping’ in the title. From this, we collated a list of just over 41,000 songs.

From there, we then found the songs and artists featured in the most playlists, allowing us to discover the most popular camping songs and artists.

In the list of the most popular songs, artists were limited to their highest ranking three songs.

Playlists were taken from across the Spotify database, without any determining locational factors. This means our ranking of the top 100 songs represents the best campfire songs for worldwide campers, whether you’re camping in Australia, Canada, the UK, the USA or beyond.

James Warner Smith is the author and editor of the UK's best selling camping guidebooks, the Cool Camping series.
