The Landing has a rich history as it was once a Sacred Indian ground until the Rockefellers purchased the place in the 1850s to put in a pump station for gas lines. In the early 1900s it was also a railroad yard for shipping across the midwest and housed over 100 men. In 1986, Michael Anthony purchased the property fresh off a three-year sailing trip through the Caribbean and  the British Virgin Islands. He had a spiritual journey being moved by the wind, navigating by the stars, spear fishing for his food. He was one on one with mother nature and when he came back he wanted to build a place where others could have the same experience without having to go sailing for years. Over the years, he has planted over 22,000 trees and has built out a tiny home community. There are a total of twenty seven lots and fifteen left to still build on. He also wanted to be a pilot so he put in a runway in the center of the woods that now will be for agricultural use and camping.  The property was a yoga retreat center from 2000-2008 and even hosted the Dalai Llama in 2006 for two weeks. We look to add to the history and make this a space for people to live in harmony with nature and build a community of mindful individuals.

The Landing Eco Institute
The Landing has great potential to be a venue for spiritual retreats, yogi retreats, nature retreats, and a getaway for large groups. The host was enthusiastic about his plans for this new location, but there is still plenty of work to be done before I would recommend campers book this location with the expectation that it can fully support such retreats. There is plenty of open land for tent camping, though, and the facilities are good!

The place is magical. It felt like the Esalen of the midwest. Stephen, the host, is one of the most caring, loving and peaceful human's I have met. Such a pleasure to share time and space with him. I am already looking forward to going back.
