Red Gate Farm, LLC is beautiful, hidden oasis of sustainable permaculture totally secluded from the typical Illinois corn and soybean fields. We are a very active, working, horse-powered farm. From the moment you drive in, you will see differences from most modern farms. Our laying hens freely run our green pastures; all our livestock are rotated throughout our land to ensure biodiversity and soil health; our heritage breed hogs are nearly unnoticed as they forage in their forest paddocks; our small herd of Alpine goats help us clear and manage invasive forages while providing amazing milk to drink; our horses live on a “Paddock Paradise” track system that meanders through our woodlands, imitating the movements of wild horse herds; our ponds have been carefully designed to stop erosion of our precious top soils; our orchards and gardens are designed to grow in harmony with nature while providing chemical-free food for the family; and so much more!

Our pop-up camper is located near the main house, right off the trail that takes you into the woodlands. After parking and checking in, you will be provided an info packet to assist you during your stay.  We offer 1 private Pop-up camper site (as well as a primitive camp site). *PLEASE NOTE: Our camper is available and ready to use, however, the screened in porch pictured was recently damaged in a storm, so that will not be available until repairs are made.*. You should also be prepared for some hiking to get to the pond or primitive site areas, as they are located .a short distance from the main house, camper, and parking area.

Once you get settled in to your camper, you can sit back and relax, as you take in the sights and sounds of nature that will surround you. Although you are only a half mile from the nearest main road, you will feel almost completely secluded. At dusk and dawn, if you sit quietly enough, you may even see some of our many white-tail deer, wild turkey, or other wildlife come to drink at the ponds.  You can swim in the pond, use the boat, or even walk around the farm to enjoy the scenery.

If you leave time for sight-seeing in the area, we are surrounded by wonderful and historical attractions!  We are just 2 miles from Lincoln's New Salem State Park and Historic Site.  Roughly 20 miles southwest of us is the Illinois capital, Springfield, which has an array of great restaurants such as Darcy's Pint which serves up the famous award-winning Horseshoe; historic sites including the famous Lincoln Presidential Museum and Lincoln's Village; Knights Action Park and Water Park, perfect for a hot summer day; and much more!  About 30 minutes west of the farm is Jim Edgar Park, which has some amazing fishing ponds, hiking and horse-back riding trails, and wildlife viewing.

If you’re interested in experiencing farm life, we welcome you to join us for chore time. We offer educational tours and other options by appointment for an additional fee, or you can also schedule a "Beginner's Horse Experience," riding lesson, or even a horse-drawn wagon or carriage ride for a discounted hourly rate. In addition, we offer fresh, pastured eggs, meats, and seasonal produce for sale, all of which was grown right here on the farm. For more info on options, just ask!  We are happy to send you info in advance!

Our goal is to provide you with an opportunity to experience our piece of paradise, and create memories you will always cherish!

Sean and Danielle were great hosts. They were even were watching the weather and suggested for our comfort the Pop Up Paradise instead of the tent we were going to set up, and it proved to be a great decision because there was a torrential rainstorm the night we stayed. Their son greeted us and gave us a thorough orientation, as Mom and Dad were headed to Springfield to provide horse driven carriage rides. The camper was set up and very comfortable. The next morning, we had a nice chat with Sean and Danielle and learned the beautiful and interesting story of their family. Danielle walked us around to see all the different animals and explained the work they put in to create a sustainable farm in harmony with plants, farm animals and wildlife. We were happy to take home some fresh eggs and herbs. We highly recommend the Pop Up Paradise and hope to return again.

The camper was a nice change from tent camping and the beds were comfy. The host was very accommodating and friendly. All of the animals we met were a bonus to us! The lake is small and private, we caught many small fish and took the v bottom boat for a few laps. The kids swam in the lake, not quite clear enough for me and too cold, but the kids had a blast. We also did an intro to horses experience (extra fee) and that was a nice touch. Camper had the little things to make the stay easier (plastic ware, cast iron skillet, rags, pump sink, mini fridge). The tent site that is a seperate rental looked neat, it's right on the lake instead of up by the host's home. Don't forget your sunscreen, bug spray, floaties, and a fishing pole!

What a great experience! This was a first stop on our 2 week road trip - where we were mostly camping in tents, so we opted to begin with a little luxury. My husband and I and our two kids (3 and 5) stayed in the pop-up camper on site. The hosts are amazing! They greeted us upon arrival, gave us a tour of their sustainable farm (worth doing for a small extra fee!) and showed us all areas accessible to us. The kids got to help with morning chores, swim in the pond, and hike the land. It is a running farm, so there is something constantly happening - NOT distracting or noisy at all - on the contrary , very welcomed and even entertaining. The camper is older, but had all the necessities we needed - a propane stove (outside), water and beds to sleep on. There is a fire pit and table right outside the camper which we utilized quite often. The property also offers a couple primitive sites next to their pond for tent camping. There is a row boat, plenty opportunities for fishing (which my husband enjoyed) and even though the shores of the pond are pretty mucky - the pond is completely fine for swimming, to cool off/rinse off. A GREAT place to come if you want to witness farm life and meet a wonderful family. It is completely up to you how involved or "not-bothered" you want to be.
