Accessible from I 94 but nature is in full bloom here. We are a heritage farm, so we are a mix of rural and suburban. Our neighbors are another farm and nature preserve in the tent area, and gardens in the RV area. The creek area looks like a nature preserve. and is truly transformative. Take your pick based on the diversity on this place.

Paradise in the city!
I was coming to Chicago to see a concert and wanted a cheap, easy place to crash afterward before driving a few hundred miles back home. I did not need or expect much, and CoGro Cooperative seemed like it would work well. However, instead of just a place to pitch my tent and sleep, I found a magical, wild oasis with the most amazing hosts and an experience of kindness and hospitality that I will never forget!
First, the property is simply beautiful. There is a profusion of lush flora on every inch of the land. Some of it is cultivated and some grows wild. The effect is as if you are in an English secret garden. There is meadow and woods, a clear, cold stream, flowers and fruit trees, garden patches and a delightful frog pond. I was invited to enjoy the mulberries, strawberries, black raspberries, apples, and an array of other edible plants during my stay. I had a selection of idyllic camp sites to choose from among all of this natural beauty. My tent was surrounded by flowers and there were strawberries growing right outside of my door, what could be better!?!
The amenities were as described and the hosts went out of their way to make sure I was in need of nothing. They provided suggestions on how to get to the downtown Chicago theater district for my show, providing options for public transportation, parking, directions, all of the local insights so I could choose the way that worked best for me. I have truly never received such hospitality! I had planned on leaving first thing in the morning, but ended up staying till check-out time in the afternoon to enjoy spending time with this wonderful family in their hidden oasis.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough. It is so beautiful, with amazing hosts, it is an easy drive to downtown Chicago or there is a train stop just down the road. There are nearby stores if you need to pick up anything. I will definitely book here again the next time I am traveling to the area, and even as far away as I am, it would be more than worth it to make the trip just to stay here again.
Prairie land oasis
I took my 2 kids in an overnight to the CoGro Coop. We were looking for a place not too far from the city. We loved it! It was close enough to our home, and our plans the following day, but was definitely the getaway into nature we were looking for. Michael wasn’t there when we arrived but he had given us great directions and even had the fire pit prepped so all I had to do was light the paper bags at the bottom. When Michael arrived he took the time to show my kids around, point out cool stuff he grows on the land (a poison ivy antidote) and GIANT Sunflowers. And let them play with his dog! Unfortunately, thunderstorms cut our trip short but we plan to come back.
A couple things to note: while at the site and on the land, it feels very rural and private, some sounds can remind you that you are near bustling suburbs not far from downtown Chicago. There is a train that runs and you will hear, and on Saturday, I could hear a mariachi band playing a bar nearby until maybe 11 or so. Neither of these bothered us much because we are city folk but there is a price you pay being close to a major city.
This is a such a great getaway with a great, kind host. I highly recommend it!
