The vibe at The Meadow
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
The Meadow is a very special place. Nestled in the trees by Freeman Creek sits a quaint & rustic little cabin, vintage camper, fire pit with outdoor kitchen gear, a picnic table, a hammock and a porch swing. The cabin is cozy and normally heated by an Old Majestic wood stove as well as a heater, but while visiting the power had been down and we just had the wood stove and some kerosene lanterns and flashlights. Honestly, it was the type of experience we were looking for anyway.
Both nights we fell asleep to the sound of owls hooting in trees nearby and the creek rustling by. We also sat under a sky filled with more stars than I've seen in a long, long time (and I live in the middle of nowhere, Montana).
What makes The Meadow even more special is the hosts who own it. Shannon and Doug are two of the most gracious, warm & welcoming hosts I've ever met. Not only did they accommodate us on extremely short notice, but they also welcomed us into their home, shared stories about their lives & family and cooked us some delicious meals! They know the area very well (Doug used to work for the Forest Service and spent a lot of time exploring the surrounding mountains), so they can provide suggestions for the many activities in the area. With the Salmon River right there, a peak you can hike to through their backyard, Goldbug Hot Springs down the road and Lost Trail Powder Mountain not far away, there's something to do in every season.
I can't wait to go back and visit again!
This is a beautiful, secluded spot situated on the banks of a rushing creek. The cabin is rustic-cute and there is plenty of room to roam on the land. Be sure to bring your own water. As awesome as the site is, the true highlight is the incredible hospitality of Shannon & Doug. They greeted us warmly, fed us & treated us like family. Such a treat!
Shannon & Doug are just wonderful people. I appreciate them letting me stay in their home when I changed plans last minute and they had guests in the cabin/camper. I wish I could have stayed in one of them, as they are just as adorable as their pictures. It was lovely to meet them, get to know them a bit, & have a beautiful base for exploring Salmon. I'll be back, Shannon, to help with the lavender! Thank you for your wonderful hospitality.
Doug and Shannon were excellent hosts, easy and interesting to talk to and the location was as quaint as it looks in the pictures. I slept like a rock in the loft (it's possible to sleep on the ground floor or in the loft—I wasn't going to miss the opportunity to sleep on the second floor, though!) with the gurgling stream in the background.
The little cabin is a fair distance from the main house separated by a stand of trees. Plenty of privacy.
Note that WiFi is available but expect it to work perfectly at the main house but maybe not at the cabin. I was able to get 3G though through my provider, though.
No hesitation in recommending to other travellers. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to experience this cabin and meet the lovely hosts.

Amazing place! Near a small creak with place for a camp fire,...that was our best stay on our 3-weeks US journey! The hosts? They are great! Till now we have never met someone so kind and friendly. The cottage is great,...rustic equiped and great place to set the brain on OFF!
A wonderful snowy experience
My partner and I stayed at the Meadow this past January and we had a phenomenal time. Not only were Shannon and Doug excellent hosts, the little cabin fit us comfortably. There is a porta-potty outside, but Doug and Shannon are great about letting guests use their bathroom in their home, so you don't have to worry about not being able to shower. While the nearby town of Salmon is really small, Shannon and Doug informed us of things to do in the area. We went to the Sacajawea Center and to the hot springs. To our surprise, our hosts also took us ice fishing, which we had never done before. They also provided us with breakfast and dinner while we were staying with them. On one night Shannon prepared the trout that we had caught! Many people want to avoid this area during the winter months because of the snow, but my partner and I still had a great time! I would recommend checking out this camp if you are in the area, in our case we drove from Portland (14 hours) just to come here.
