This. place. rocks.
This is hands down the BEST place to stay on Hipcamp on the Southeast side of the Big Island. Along with Gingerhill Farm Retreat (Captain Cook area) and Hammock Cabana (Hilo area), this was on my list of my top 3 favorite Hipcamps in Hawaii, after over a week on a Hipcamp road trip.
Highlights of Kualoli Cabins:
-RIGHT across from the beach. Could literally hear the waves crashing.
-The drive in is amazing and beautiful
-fruit trees everywhere! I picked my own oranges and lemons and ate fresh fruit and hot tea with lemon
-the common area is super rad. beautiful views of the greenery and garden, long picnic table, open air kitchen, hammock. loved it.
-everything you need in the kitchen - utensils, mugs, pots, stove, fridge...
-cutest two cats who are very friendly and will snuggle with you in the kitchen area
-cool design, clean
-Host Megan was very communicative
This place was better than I could have expected, though not without its flaws. But those flaws truly are only minor ones. The cabins are really neat and I really love the design. They are pretty open air (with screens to keep bugs mostly out) which is great because it really makes you feel as if you're outside as well as make the room cool with the airflow. Which, though, is a kinda double edged sword there. There isn't any way to cover the open half of the walls for privacy when changing. The good thing though is there is a lot of greenery surrounding the cabins. The open air kitchen and socal area are really nice looking, cozy, and made me wish I had something like it at home. The showers aren't really well lit but otherwise nice, so either shower during the day or bring some light with you. ( The lights in there were either it off batteries, or really dim during our stay). All in all though, a fantastic place to stay. and in my opinion much better way to stay and soak in the atmosphere of the big island than any hotel could offer. If I ever found myself back, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at this place again.
This space was so beautifully thought out. The cabin itself was lovely, with the sounds of the jungle and the surf surrounding you. The grounds and common space are also lovely, with space to hang and cook and enjoy just being amidst all the beatiful plants. Beware, moisture and spiders (with their perfect crystaline webs in many walkways), but I can’t imagine that isnt the case anywhere you would stay in this part of the world. The room itself was spider free!
