Birds and Blossoms Retreat is a Non-Profit riverfront property in downtown Hilo with a tranquil swimming hole.  We are in walking distance to town, the farmers market and local shops. This property was once Royal  Hawaiian land; we would love to tell you the story and show you photos from the past.

The profits currently go toward the infrastructure to build the bed and breakfast and we will be specializing in working with the elderly and disabled as well as the general public.   Once built, we will be providing two scholarships a year to a Culinary and Hotel Management Student and offer externships to work at Birds and Blossoms Retreat.

This property does not allow drinking, smoking, vaping or drugs.  We are very health conscious.  No food or soda is allowed in the tents.  Only water.  We have several eating areas you can enjoy along the river.

Limited parking in front of the house; but parking is available across the street.

Sorry, No pets allowed on the property.

Covered gazebos,  tents, bedding and tarps are available upon request.  You can also provide your own tent and supplies and camp on a deck by the river. (Limited supplies available; please contact us in advance if you will need one)

The rate is $45 .00 a day for one person and $50.00 for two people.  Extra people will be $5.00 a day.  Please book in advance; we have a Pay Pal account set up for your use.

We have an outside covered kitchen area.  This includes a gas stove, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, cups and some pots, pans and dishes and silverware.  We have a charcoal grill by the river your welcome to use.

The shower is a cold outside water source we are working on getting hot water soon.  A porta toilet is located at the entrance and we are working on getting a septic system or decomposing toilets.

Johanna is really kind and she lives on a beautiful place! The campsite is beautiful and the spaces are big. It's a perfect place next to the town.

Johanna lives on a beautiful property right next to the river and a 15min walk into Hilo center, however, it’s in the middle of renovations so there are a few workers on the property and construction areas. The campsite itself doesn’t have hot water and the port-a-potty toilet is quite far from the sink and shower. Johanna herself is very thoughtful host and the place will truly shine once finished.

This was a peaceful place to pitch our tent for a night. Great location close to Hilo, but you wouldn't know it when you're by the river listening to the birds! The space is nicely laid out and Johanna was there to meet us. There was one canopy for our tent, one with chairs under it, and one with a platform and rug set up for yoga or meditation. Parking was a little confusing upon arrival (we were instructed to park in the "driveway" which looked like the start of an unfinished road, just to the left of the neighbors driveway and fence.) You have to walk down a hill with a pathway to get from the parking to the tent, and the portopotty is up at the top of the hill.

Joanne was very nice and her property is as well. It’s very close to Honeli’l surf spot and Hilo town. The best part, from a campers perspective, is that you set your tent on a covered deck. So you don’t have to worry about everything getting soaked. A real plus when you consider that Hilo gets an evening rain almost every night.

Johanna was a very kind and welcoming host. While there is a lot of construction going on, the property is lovely and walking distance to downtown Hilo.
