Presenting the Sunrise Cabin at the Camp at Howling Dog Guest House! Situated at 1400 feet elevation with views of the sunrise, Hilo airport and the coastline. Enjoy comfortable temps in the 60s-80s year round. Wake to sunrise over the ocean and fall asleep gazing at a billion stars. Your private glass-front cabin with queen size bed has a lanai that literally hangs over the edge overlooking the Hilo coastline. The camp is a large grassy area surrounded by bamboo for privacy. Parking space for 1 car. But, don't worry, we still have space for tenters! If you have a party larger than 3, see our other sites available at our other listing, Camp at Howling Dog Guest House, where you can reserve tent space for up to 12 campers and 2 parking spots. Once parked you will walk past the camp base canopy containing the shared camp kitchen with filtered potable water at the sink prep table, gas stove, charcoal grill and table. Camp base has solar electricity and is a great place to hangout on rainy days, charge your devices and enjoy playing bored games. Next to the kitchen canopy is the bamboo dressing room where you can enjoy a hot nature shower. Nearby we have provided a camp fireplace (within local fire laws) perfect for chilly nights and smores. Your cabin is a short walk across the soft mossy lawn where you can play yard games; or just relax sunbathing and stargazing. For the utmost in glamping convenience your outhouse with pump-flush porta potty is only a couple of steps away from your cabin, and a regular flush toilet is nearby Camp Base. You can take a walk down the road to the stream or head down the hill to Honolii surfing beach, Hilo downtown or other island adventures!.

It was AMAZING! The accommodations were great and the view was to die for. Unfortunately it did rain on us, but Steve had already prepared for it by putting up canopies for us. We loved that we were far enough away from town that we still felt like we were getting away from it all, yet close enough to get to things if needed.

We will definitely be staying here again and we will recommend it to all our friends.

The Howling Dog Guest House is an oasis! The property was gorgeous, well thought-out and well-maintained. We loved the tree house and the amazing views it offered. You really feel separate from the owner's house because of the kitchen/ fireplace area. That area has everything you need for a deluxe camping experience - a stove, grill, running water, solar power to charge your phone, picnic table, shower etc etc. Very complete, show up with your sleeping bag and enjoy! We got great vibes from the host and wished we could stay and hang out longer!

Spent two nights at this beautiful camp site. The host was kind enough to help me to make a fire at fireplace. Though I was a bit worried about rains, the weather was perfect. It did rain around midnight, but tarp above the tent helped me to keep dry. Also, the property has a kitchen & hot shower! As I waned to feel like being in the middle of rainforest, the location was perfect. The property is so green surrounded by nature. At the night, it took a bit time to be accustomed with singing noise from frog, but listening to birds singing in the early morning was awesome experience.

Howling Dog is probably one of the best hipcamps on the Big Island. We stayed here after a week of traveling around the island, and we were so impressed. The amenities are fantastic - everything you could need and more. Our kids really loved all the yard games that were available to play. It felt like being in our own backyard but with a much more stunning view :) We loved our stay and would most definitely come back!

There is a 'camp garden' where Steve shares his produce. We enjoyed fresh cucumbers with our dinner! We chose to pitch our tent on the grass instead of under the pavilion in the back. The yard is secluded and great.

This was hands down the best camping experience I’ve ever had! Steve has thought of everything to make your stay at his jungle oasis cozy, fun, and convenient. We didn’t want to leave and will most definitely be back! Warm showers, clean bathroom, and an amazing view of Hilo. Thank you so much Steve! You were an amazing host!

What an awesome first hipcamp experience for us! Steve went out his way to make sure we had a wonderful adventure in the Hilo area, and you can tell he's been very thoughtful about how he set everything up. His place was close enough to the city to do any activities there during the day, but still far enough where you could relax and unwind in a secluded and serene area. You can even see Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Kilauea all from his treehouse! Steve's setup has everything you need and works really well for the periodic rain of that area. His two dogs were very sweet and made the property feel extra protected. When we go back to Hilo, Steve's place will be one of our first stops!

Stayed for a three nights. I was gone most of the day but it was worth it to stay there just for the sunrise. Steve is an excellent host and took care to show all the facilities and occasionally ask if I needed anything (I did not as the camp has everything I needed). If you stay in the sunrise cabin you don’t have to bring any extra supplies with you as every comfort you might need is present. I would stay here again if I return to Hilo.
