Camp

22 private acres spanning the bottom valley all the way to the top of Sand Mountain. The mountain has several natural terraces and flat areas suitable for campers to choose from including a nice spot overlooking a rock garden. As you ascend Sand Mountain, the vegetation thins revealing spectacular views of Lookout Mountain especially in the fall & winter months after the leaves have fallen. At the very top of the property are 30+ ft high cliffs with a few caves large enough to accommodate several sleeping bags. Guided hikes to the cliffs & caves are available upon request. Campers are able to choose their camp site as long as its within the property boundaries. This is raw land & raw forest. If you enjoy bush craft, there is plenty of material for you to build a lean- to, tee-pee, or structure of choice. Trees range from poplar to multiple species of oak. Natural wildlife include deer, wild turkeys, scorpions, and ticks. You're welcome to bring fluffy as we've never seen any predators, but there is a slight chance there could be some around. A lost animal on the mountain could be near impossible to find.

Amenities

When it rains, we have running water. Otherwise we have treated rain water for showering, cleaning, & consumption. We have a shower & tub with hot water that you can use. If that is further away than you like, we can provide black solar heated shower bags for an outdoor shower that will need to be returned. Please use only bio-degradable soaps & pack out your trash. Recycling is available. Fires prohibited except in fire rings where brush has been cleared 1 ft away and after fire safety talk at check in. There will be a fire safety talk upon arrival. Please don't start a forest fire. A tripod camping grill can be provided upon request but will need to be returned. You can use the bathroom anywhere, but we can also provide a portable camping potty. This place is perfect if you are looking for a digital detox! While we are within range for cellular service, there is no wifi unless you bring it, and don't expect electricity.

Parking

Parking is limited. Do everyone a favor and combine vehicles. There is room for 3 cars at the bottom on our land but there shouldn't be any problem parking on the street. There is a steep unpaved, rocky dirt road that goes up 1/3 of the mountain. It is not recommended for Sedans and other vehicles low to the ground. 4 wheel drive should be used if it is wet on both the lower parking area & our dirt road. Up that road there is room for 2 more vehicles. If you are in a sedan & have a lot of equipment, we may be able to pick you & your equipment up at the bottom & drive you up the road.

Nearby

We are a few exits down the highway from the TN river where you can fish, paddle, & swim. There is also fishing in the lake inside the Cloudland Canyon State Park, which is less than 5 miles away. 8 miles away, on top of Lookout Mountain is a famous hang gliding school so you can mark that off of your bucket list. Bouldering and rock climbing can be done on Lookout Mountain & near the TN River. While you're welcome to mountain bike on our land, we have no developed trails. If you want trails, we recommend going to the next mountain over, Racoon Mountain. The Racoon Mountain TVA has trails maintained by SORBA. Speaking of Racoon Mountain, there is a cave system in it much more extensive than ours. There are multiple routes and tour options including wilder cave "spelunking" that are available for a fee. Please no hunting or rock climbing on this property.

All campers will be required to complete a waiver before their stay.

As someone who normally backpacks out to camp or reserves walk in sites at parks, my expectation was a cleared area with a fire ring and open spots for the campers in the group. This is exactly what I found. With ridges and mountains peeking through the trees, there was ample tree-cover to keep the camp cool and the ground around the main area and fire ring cleared. Ample kindling and downed wood were available that the camp host allowed to supplement our hauled in fire wood. This in conjunction with a supplied hanging pit grill made for some great camp meals. The hosts, who live on property were delightful. It was clear that they wanted the group to feel welcome on their land and even brought ribs to share with the camp along with some suggestions of local outdoor activities and informed us of the on site treated water system for cleaning or filterable water. All in all, a wonderful little spot close to Lula Land trust and Cloudland Canyon only a few minutes away from the crowded parks. Next time I lead a hike in the area, I will be reserving the camp at this property.

Proper fire pit. Some bushwhacking exploration up the mountain behind the camp.Plenty of space for shenanigans.Ample firewood and convenient camp layout.
