FAQs Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Serenity Cabin Q: How do I cross the creek to access Serenity Cabin? A: The cabin is accessible via a primitive driveway that requires two creek crossings. The creek is only a few inches deep, and generally, any type of car can cross it, unless there have been frequent storms. An SUV is ideal for traversing the water comfortably. Q: What should I wear for creek crossing and hiking? A: Be sure to pack water boots, muck boots, or sandals for crossing the creek on foot and for hiking and exploring the beautiful surroundings. Q: How is the communication and internet connectivity at Serenity Cabin? A: Serenity Cabin offers limited communication, with no Wi-Fi and spotty cell service, allowing you to truly disconnect and unwind. A two-way radio connects you to your host, who lives on the property and is happy to interact or provide complete seclusion, depending on your preferences. Q: What type of trout fishing is available at Serenity cabin? A: The stream adjacent to the cabin provides a challenging but rewarding fishing experience, with Brook Trout and Brown Trout hiding in the rocky pools and undercut banks. While it doesn't have the traditional riffles and runs, nearby streams offer this type of fishing experience. Additionally, beginner fishing is available on the trout pond, which is stocked with Rainbow Trout and provides a great opportunity to learn and hone your skills. For those seeking guidance or instruction, our hosts can provide tips and connect you with local guides. Q: How private and secluded is Serenity Cabin really? A: Serenity Cabin is extremely secluded, offering a rare opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The campfire area in front of the cabin is private, your own personal space. The only people you are likely to encounter are hosts, staff and perhaps other guests, ensuring that you can truly unwind and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the valley. The property is located away from any busy roads or traffic, with no noise to disrupt your peace and quiet. You can enjoy the tranquil setting, with every neighbor out of earshot. There are occasional work projects we need to accomplish, but we promise to keep these to a minimum while you’re here. Our goal is to make you feel like you own the valley during your stay, allowing you to relax and reconnect with nature in a truly unique and exclusive setting. Q: I’ve heard there can be biting flies, gnats, horse flies, and mosquitoes in the area. How can I prepare for this? A: You’re correct, these insects are part of the natural ecosystem in the Driftless region, reminding us of its untouched beauty. However, we’ve got you covered at Serenity cabin. We provide effective insect repellents for our guests’ use, ensuring you can enjoy the outdoors without discomfort. For those occasional days when insects are particularly active, we also offer face netting. Your comfort and connection to nature are our top priorities. Q: what repellents do you provide or recommend? A: Picaridin-based repellent: an excellent alternative to DEET. Picaridin is effective against mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, gnats, and chiggers. Not neurotoxic. It's safe for use on both skin and clothing and is less likely to cause skin irritation. Plus, it's virtually odorless and does not damage or dissolve plastics and synthetic fabrics. 2. Lusa Bug Balm: A lovingly made local product, Lusa uses a blend of essential oils to deter bugs. This all-natural, organic balm offers a gentle and earth-friendly option for those preferring to avoid synthetic repellents. 3. Permethrin spray: aka tick armor. For maximum protection against ticks, we provide a Permethrin-based spray for use on clothing and gear. Permethrin not only repels ticks but can kill them on contact. Please note this is for fabric application only and not for direct application to skin. Q: Can additional guests camp on the property? A: Yes! Primitive camping is available for additional guests at just $20 per adult per night. Let us know your total number of guests, and we'll send you an offer. Q: What about wildlife encounters at Serenity Cabin, especially large predators like black bears? A: While black bears do inhabit southwest Wisconsin, it is extremely rare for humans to come into contact with them or any other large predators. The Serenity Cabin property is generally safe from any such encounters. Q: What precautions should I take against ticks, and do you provide tick protection? A: Ticks can be a concern in the area. To protect yourself, we recommend using a permethrin spray on your gear and clothing. We provide permethrin spray for our guests' convenience. Q: Can we access guides for foraging, fishing, hiking? A: Yes! Tony and other hosts are often free to act as your personal guide. Just tell us what experiences you are seeking. Q: Do we need to bring firewood A: No. We a have limitless supply Q: What's the deal with the security cameras? A: For safety and security there are cameras around the host cabin. However for your privacy and comfort there are zero cameras adjacent to serenity cabin. There are occasional trail cams as well. Q: Is the cabin off grid? A: Serenity does have a large solar panel. The energy harvested is fed directly into the grid, and largely offsets the energy utilized. For practical reasons, there are no solar power batteries at the cabin, so technically not off grid, but perhaps the next best thing. We also have a private well. Q: What should I know about reaching Serenity Cabin during winter? A: Accessing Serenity Cabin in winter can be more challenging, but the added seclusion enhances the enjoyment of your stay.
