This is the original site that started Camp Escape. It boasts of a private dock, water raft, and 5000 acres of woods at your back. Camp out in isolation for the best star gazing and camp fire stories. Voted best in Wisconsin and top 10 in the US 2020!
Deep in the backwoods of rural Wisconsin, Camp Escape is an excellent spot to disconnect with the 21st century and get completely off grid. At this camp, a handful of secluded sites each come with spectacular lakeside views and shelter from pine trees for complete isolation.
Here’s a chance to test your wilderness skills. There’s 70 acres of private forest and four kettle lakes at your disposal, so getting to know your surroundings must be top of the list. You can potter around on the water in rowing boats and canoes (both free for campers to use) and fish for bass to grill over your campfire. Kids can safely run off energy, make new friends at the play areas, or go scavenging for raspberries in season.
Beyond camp, there’s a whole wilderness of 5,000 acres just begging to be explored; take a backpack and hike or horseback ride into the forest, or rent an ATV or snowmobile for winter adventures in the hills. At the end of the day, though, there’s probably nothing better than sitting on a wooden dock overlooking a lake and contemplating the wilderness as the sun sets.
No-fuss amenities at this back-to-nature campground include fire rings, wooden tables, and parking by each site. Gas cylinders are available, but there’s no drinking water so you'll need to bring your own. There’s one compostable toilet on the park as well as plenty of dirt (and trees to hide behind) for catholes.

“The woods” was the perfect seclusion we were looking for - good enough to return for the second year in a row (not something we often do). It’s wrapped by water which makes for a gorgeous, relaxing layout, and no nearby campsites! There’s a small rickety dock, rowboat provided, and a midwater floating dock if you want to get out on the water or try some fishing.
The only negatives are really just informational so that you’re prepared if booking. The camp’s grounds are very hilly - the only flat spots are for a tent and table/chairs - don’t book if you have bad ankles or elderly. It rains pine needles, cover your food. There aren’t well defined trails directly adjacent, they’re a ten minute drive or a boat trip across the lake. Some campers from across the lake can be seen and heard if they’re out on the lake.
Camp Escape: The Woods was everything we were looking for! Being on the water is an important factor of any of our camping excursions and this site fit the bill. The woods and private lake made for the best explorations for our family of five! Even though it rained for one out of our three days, we couldn't pull our kids away from the dock or rowboat to fish.
As if such a great camping site weren't enough, Tara was always available for insight and to answer a question.
Due to the hilly nature, we couldn't pitch our hotel-like enormous tent by the water, but instead put in stakes at the top of the hill on the end of the road, which was perfect for us!
I can't recommend the host or this site enough! Thanks for a wonderful vacation, Tara!

This is our second year back at The Woods and it was just a lovely, restful, and fun as last year!
Tara has been a kind host answering all my questions in a timely manner as well as making suggestions on areas to hike and places to visit.
If you’re looking for a place to rough it for a bit, but also get away and rest The Woods is perfect! Our vacation was spent enjoying all the joys of nature - campfires, swimming, paddle boarding, hanging out on the raft, and pleasant walks through the woods. My family and I always feel so refreshed and happy after our visit!
The site was fantastic and exactly as advertised. My kids had a great time running around the woods and made many memories. We plan on returning soon. Watch the leaches in the kettle lake but that was expected - swim to the raft and you'll be fine. The boats were a welcome addition to our weekend as well. Tara was great and very responsive, thank you again for sharing your little corner of the world with us.
Awesome camp site! Will definitely be returning!
Fabulous site! Stayed here over the July 4th weekend.
Our three labs thoroughly enjoyed being off leash and swimming to their hearts' content. Enjoyed it so much we're planning to return in September.

This was my boyfriend and I first camping trip together with our 3 dogs! One of our most memorable times as a family! The woods is beautiful and is everything we could ask for. We paddled on the lake everyday. When eating meals we sat staring at the beautiful calm lake and took in all the nature! Our dogs absolutely loved this place, freely running around and swimming all day long! Tara was super friendly and brought us delicious eggs upon request and has very cute dogs! I tell everyone about our time here and all the fun we had! I can’t wait to come back and camp and make even more memories!
