Whycamp in an overcrowded, commercial campground when you're in WestVirginia with all its untamed beauty? Experience the uniqueness ofPRIVATE primitive camping -- a truly relaxing getaway to themountains. Enjoy peaceful and private, safe and secure primitivecamping on ourfarm. The Tawney Farm is a small-scale sheep farm located adjacentto the beautiful Gauley River National Recreation Area in theMountain Lakes region of central West Virginia. We're also superclose to the newest national park, the New River Gorge NationalPark.  Our 126 acre farm lies nestled in between twobeautiful mountains in the Gauley River gorge. Here weraise Merino and Jacob sheepfor wool where I process the fiber and either sell it to other fiberartists or felt it into crafts and hats myself. Our farm is also hometo a miniature horse, chickens, and of course dogs and cats.

Weprovide a unique totallyprivate primitivecamping experience where you get EXCLUSIVE use of the campground. Inother words, you will be the only campers. Perfectfor couples who want to get away from it all, for families or groupsof friends to reconnect and catch up, or for larger groups who wantto plan an outing orevent.

Drinkin the beautiful views of the Gauley River gorge and hike our naturetrails while experiencing the sights and sounds of a real workingfarm. When you arrive, you can choose your campsite. Hike to the topof the mountain to camp and experience incredible night skies. Or ifyou aren’t up to the 20 minute hike to the top, just pop up yourtent at one of the shady, wooded campsites along the trail. You caneven camp in one of our scenic pastures where you can camp in yourtent or sleep in your car/van. We can even accommodate small camperswith no hookups.  Get away from it all! Experience thewilderness and wonder of West Virginia as only a native WestVirginian could. Fry up some farm fresh eggs over the campfire orgrill. Park-style grills, fire pit grills and camping cook stoves areprovided for your use. Your first load of firewood is free and we'lleven provide charcoal for the grills.  We have tables and campchairs you can use as well.  And to make your "roughingit" camping experience not so rough, we've added a fewamenities! Wild and Wooly was just what we were looking for and more! Susan's property is on a quiet dead-end road with absolutely no traffic. She allowed us to check in a little early so we could head straight to the lake. We had our choice of places to camp along the field and multiple fire rings. The hot shower was an added bonus to our weekend. She gave us a great list of attractions in the area, many of which we hit. We're looking forward to a return trip and would definitely consider staying there again.

We absolutely loved the land and the location. It was beautiful and had all kinds of games available. We loved the hot shower and the covered pavilion for cooking and drinking some coffee. Susan was super. Very kind, accommodating and helpful. She even through a tarp on our tents when a little threat of rain was coming while we were out adventuring. Can’t wait to go back!

Wild and Wooly is a good description of this campground. The host, Susan, is very nice and welcoming. We had a choice of several locations around a large meadow to park, we chose the site that would give us morning sun and afternoon shade. We watched deer and wild turkey wander around the meadow, and listened to a late night conversation between several barred owls.
Hot water shower, clean porta johns, an area to wash dishes, and shelters all make this a great place to say. And there are so many nearby beautiful areas to visit! If you like white water, or waterfalls, or hiking in deep mature forests full of moss and fern you will find something to do here!

The farm is in the back country very close to the Gauley River. The directions she gave me to get there were very clear. I definitely recommend this site for someone looking for a secluded, back woods, quiet camping experience. Susan and her husband were very friendly and helpful. There were amenities provided such as a hot shower, a sink to do dishes, and they gave us our first bundle of wood for free (they also gave us some more complimentary wood after a big storm that passed one of the nights we were here). There is a beautiful view of the stars at this site that made for charming campfire nights. We had a wonderful time at this site and look forward to coming back next time.

We booked this trip looking for a secluded campground to spend a weekend away with friends. What we got was what we wanted plus so much more.

Susan and James were gracious hosts; kind, welcoming, hardworking, and fun to trade stories and chat with.

They’ve really made their home a special place and have extended it to those who happen upon it. Many spots to explore and lovely accommodations (for a primitive camp site) all across their spot.

Beyond the land and the hosts lies the Gauley River. Just a short jaunt from their spot, Susan gives great directions. A great place to spend a hot day like we had.

I could rant and rant, though I’ll leave you to find your own magic there. We will be back again!
