Kids are free!

We purchased his property in 1981 when it was 70 acres and have been able to add to it until we are the proud owners of the 100 acre wood.  In 39 years it has grown more beautiful and now we want to share it with others who will appreciate a peaceful getaway.

With Covid, we are limiting bookings to one group at a time.

There is a brand new 16' X 20' tent platform at the dam end of the lake that you can drive to.  Pictures soon.

There is a 14' X 9' tent platform at the upper edge of the lake. We will let you know if it is dry enough to drive too or if you will have to stay on the gravel and walk a short ways.

Currently, a reasonable amount of firewood for an evening is provided. Additional bundles of wood are available for $5.00.  Bring cash please.

One beautiful campsite on the creek is about a 5 minute hike in and we recommend trekking poles as there is a narrow stretch that can be slippery.  The tent site is 12' X 7' . This site has a stone fire ring and we will provide an evenings worth  of firewood.

Our spring fed lake is about 2.5 acres and is wonderful for a dip on hot days. We have bass, crappie, catfish and grass carp for catch and release.  We have a paddle boat and numerous kayaks available for the summer season.

There are no bright lights to hamper the night sky stargazing and the stars above the lake can be glorious.

We have numerous trails on the property that we are in the process of mapping and marking.

The spacious outhouse was built in the spring of 2020 , has solar lighting as well as motion detector light inside. There is a 3 season handwashing station. In winter, please bring hand sanitizer.

We have a filter on the warm weather sink for delicious drinking water.

The kitchen consists of a refrigerator, 2 burner stove, BBQ grill, seasonal cold water sink with water filter and a beautiful granite counter.  You will have to provide plates, pans, utensils etc. and you will need to heat the water for dishwashing at this time. (We have some pans for that.)  There are multiple picnic tables and chairs. We want to remind campers that there are bears and raccoons here though we have not had any problems. Please keep food and trash secured.

This a beautiful, wild, peaceful place with limited cell phone service. We live on the property are are available to answer questions and for any emergency. Because it is wild, please keep your eyes open for snakes and protect yourself from ticks, mosquitoes and poison ivy.

We are 6 miles from Kibler Valley on the Dan River with recreational releases for Class 2 white water kayaking in the summer. We are close to Class 1 kayak and canoe river runs as well in Danbury NC along with hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains and Hanging Rock State Park.  We are not far from the Rock Castle Gorge trail and Buffalo Mountain trail. We are close to the legendary Mayberry NC , also known as Mt Airy NC and many wineries and breweries in NC and VA. The world famous Primland Resort is 15 miles away.

Because of Covid, we are only taking one booking at a time so you can choose your spot and have the whole place to yourself and your group.  Groups are limited to 10 people.

I wish there were better words to use besides "perfect", "serene", "amazing", and "love" but Wild Toad Lake is absolutely perfect!! Being the only campers there was so serene and all the amenities are amazing!! We loved the site by the lake and the tent platform was large enough for our 9 person tent (and the eye bolts were brilliant for anchoring; survived a 90 minute summer severe thunderstorm with only a couple small puddles in the tent). Meals were a breeze with the provided fridge, sink, grill, and camp stove (propane included!). We had so much fun swimming, fishing, and kayaking that we didn't have time to explore the many trails on site (next trip!!). So many great experiences and the hosts are wonderful; Steve met us on the day we arrived and Patty checked in once but they provided their contact info if we needed anything during our stay. We Love Wild Toad Lake and can't wait for our next trip and longer stay!!!

We loved our time at Wild Toad Lake! The hosts are wonderful, and the amenities amazing! We had 5 teenagers with us and we stayed on the property the entire time! So much to do! The well marked trails were fun to explore and very easy to follow. Our oldest and his girlfriend went to Hanging Rock (about a half hour drive) for a beautiful easy hike one morning, but other than that, the rest of us spent the entire 3 days on-site.

We are from Coastal VA and were pleasantly surprised that it was so much cooler and so many less bugs/mosquitoes than where we’re from. Even in July, nights were cool and refreshing. The lake was nice and cool! We spent every afternoon hanging out on the lake. Since it’s spring fed, it’s surprisingly cool!… the deeper you go, the cooler it is. They have an anchor attached to a bobber in the middle of the lake. We brought big tubes that had rope on them and attached to that anchor. It allowed us just to hang out and swim from the middle! The kids loved it. Can’t say enough about the kayaks and paddle board. Our youngest was able to learn and practice on both for the first time. Perfect location for that! The lake is small enough for us not to worry, but big enough for them to explore.

The outhouse was very clean and a bit removed from the kitchen area and the campsite, which was nice. The shower is literally right next to the big kitchen pavilion. It’s built very nice, but lacks a little privacy. Not a big deal right now… since only one group is allowed on site at a time, but can’t imagine doing that with a bunch of strangers around. I know the hosts have plans to do more with the shower, but for now, it works! There are 3 bags of water that are heated by the sun. We were surprised at how hot they got!

Also for the detailed people out there, the hosts provided all the hand soap, dish soap, toilet paper and even some paper towels! (Though bring your own shower stuff.) I don’t know if all that is always there, but everything was super well-stocked. We brought a hand towel for the outhouse (and there’s a peg to hang it on!) and dish towels for the kitchen sink (also a nail to hang it on.) They even had big serving spoons, scissors, two pots and much more. Everything we needed. We found the hosts to be very generous. We completely loved everything here and hope to come back again with friends!

What an amazing place to camp! Our favorite place so far! You feel like you’re renting out your very own camp! Everything is so thoughtfully planned out and convenient! We had so much fun kayaking and paddle boarding with our kids, we didn’t even explore the trails or area but we definitely want to next time! The outdoor kitchen was a game changer! So easy to prepare meals and clean up! A very generous amount of firewood was provided! The owner was very friendly and communication was great!

This was our second time at Wild Toad lake, and it’s paradise.

There were scattered thunderstorms in the forecast, but I knew that there was that large sheltered common area and that therefore the temporary rain would not be an issue.

It was early July, and it really wasn’t too hot. The lake was amazing, and the temps cooled down at night well!

We’ ll be back!!
