One-of-a-kind really only begins to describe 1-acre Sharp's Island! For starter's, this is the only legal camping option in the city of Richmond. You read that correctly. This is your own private island, and it's right in the heart of downtown RVA! The Piedmont meets the Coastal Plain right here at Sharp's Island. That makes for amazing fishing, especially during the spring

Some other incredible things about camping at Sharp's Island: You can motor up to it from Ancarrow's Landing, canoe over from the trail just below Mayo Bridge, or make this the destination for your downriver raft/kayak trip; at summer river levels there are literally dozens of great swimming holes along the banks (we can sell you tubes for lounging); choose your own campsite: sandy beach or forested interior; Fire pit ready and waiting for you. And lots more!

(You have to get to Sharp's Island on your own, but we can rent you a canoe or kayak!)

Sharps Island is an adventure from start to finish. The island is small and is absolutely beautiful. The island can accommodate a group of 15 using both tent (4 person or less) and tree hammocks. Bring a thick tent pad or sleeping bag so that you can set up your tent on the rocks at the furthest end of the island. This is a prime spot with its view and the sounds of the river. There is plenty of driftwood so there no need to bring your own wood, don't forgot your firestarter. Also bring something to cut wood and clip some of the overgrown bush that may affect the path or placement of your hammock. Going back and forth from the shore to island can be a challenge after 5pm even for a skilled kayaker, so plan to arrive early as the water levels do drop drastically and the rapids and rocks will have you spinning or floating down stream. Parking is a BIG challenge. If you park across the street from the launch in front of the Hydro Apartments and the SS Silos, you must park to the left of the yellow poles, or you can be towed. We parked 7 cars to the left of the poles and two were double parked. We also used the parking lot at Park14th, a short walk across the Mayo Bridge. You will need to download an app to pay for parking there. Bring a wagon! You will be crossing a very busy street (Hull St) and walking down a steep hill to an obstacle course across rocks to the water. We were able to temporarily park right at the flood wall on that side of the street to unload the kayaks.

I’ve travelled a lot of places, but this was by far the most fun I’ve had in a long long time. It isn’t a cake walk but that is the adventure. Andy was a gracious host and hooked it up with a canoe for the weekend on pretty short notice. Would love to come back when the water is warmer. It is a perfect spot to put up a rope and hang out on some tubes or crash at after a day of tubing. I hate strongly recommending this place to my friends but it was truly the experience of a lifetime.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to stay there due to the rain but I’m sure it would have been a great experience

The street to take your kayak and supplies over is kind of busy. You have to time it so you can get across 4 lanes and down a hill to the river. When we did this trip river levels were reporting around 4 feet. We arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon and the river was low and the current to get over to the island was strong but nothing that you couldn’t work through. I would say pack as minimally as you can and still be comfortable to avoid multiple trips back and forth across the river. We also paid the extra $12 bucks for firewood (described as similar to the bags from the grocery store) but it wasn’t there. Probably better to pack your own in as there’s some wood on the island but you have to dig around for it. Bugs were not bad when we went and we just used a little bug spray. This place is absolute heaven. It looks like a lot of work has been done clearing little trails to the different parts of the island. It’s just absolutely beautiful and private and a dream. I loved this island and as soon as we got there we wished we’d made a longer reservation. A unique and special experience.

Very memorable experience, camped 1 overnight w/ 2 adults and 4 kids. The weather forecast was less than promising, but turned out to be quite pleasant with minimal rain. I think Sharp's Island will be in my rotation of places to return too-great fishing potential and a variety of swimming spots (water shoes/sandals recommended). The osprey showed off their fishing prowess and taunted us with victory lap flyovers. But we managed to catch (and release) a decent size catfish. All in all a great time; Andy is a responsive host.

Really cool spot to stay a night in the city while feeling like you’re outside of it. It was a nice paddle over and back, and the island has a well maintained path to explore on. The landscape is varied, between exposed rock, sandy beach, and a forested interior, with all three offering great places to pitch a tent. Plus you can sound like a high roller and tell your friends that you casually rented out an island for the night

Amazing experience! Andy’s direction and communication were excellent. Crossing over from parking lot to river took a few trips to get gear down but easy access, short paddle and then you are transported to a completely different world! The paths through the island take you from sandy beach through wooded area, up to rocky formations and a smartly positioned A-frame (Kept us dry on a rainy night)and an amazing new metal sculpture. The juxtaposition of nature and city views is truly unique. Will definitely be back! Please go, enjoy, and respect the island and river by packing out what you bring and leaving no trace.
