In the lee of the Shenandoah National Park sits 200 acre Over Jordan Farm, home of Bean Hollow Grassfed, a grazing livestock operation that raises sheep and cattle. Come meander down farm lanes, watch the wild turkeys forage, and, if you are lucky, see a red fox or wild bobcat. This working farm is also home to goats, chickens and pigs, a swimming pond with sandy beach access and a restored log cabin that is a reminder of who previously inhabited this land . The views are Rappahannock County's finest and the Appalachian trail is within walking distance (less than two miles up the "holler'' from the farm). Though only 70 miles from Washington DC, the County does not have a single stop light and dark skies abound. The magic of this working landscape and its natural splendor soothes the soul.

You will not be disappointed by your stay at Over Jordan Farm! 200+ acres of gorgeous rolling farm land, surrounded by woodland and looking out to the mountains of Shenandoah, this is nothing short of an idyllic place to camp. Betsy and Michael were fantastic hosts and made us feel so welcome on their land, right down to the fresh eggs we were able to collect from the chickens each morning. There are plenty of hikes to do nearby, or you can venture into the quaint town of Little Washington, which is just a few miles down the road. In all honesty, leaving the farm property isn't even necessary with all the amenities on site as well as a sandy beach leading into the small lake - the perfect spot to just relax and take in the views! Our young children loved it and we will definitely be returning to Over Jordan again!
Overall good, some concerns
Betsy and her husband were wonderful hosts, and our large group (9 people) had a lovely time. The campsite is picturesque and gorgeous, and bathroom/shower access was good to have. But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention some issues campers should be aware of, as they were aspects we wish we had been aware of in advance:
-When we were there, there was sheep poop dispersed around the campsite in addition to 12-15 huge, wet cow poops. They were difficult to avoid and we couldn’t relax as much as we liked because of fear of the kids stepping/accidentally rolling in it. I stepped in cow pies multiple times and it was gross and frustrating This aspect of the camp site was very unpleasant, and we felt like for the price we paid we shouldn’t have had to deal with the excess of animal feces we dealt with.
- We are dog people, and their working dogs are sweet, but they were constantly at the campsite and the puppy got into our trash, our food, and the puppy nipped both of our small kids, albeit with the intention of playing. This also felt stressful to deal with, especially at night, and wasn’t something we anticipated.
You could not ask for a better location and hosts! My friends and I still can't get over how picturesque and lovely the whole weekend was. The campsite itself is in a small clearing that gets plenty of tree shade and also has a nearby water spigot, which made cooking, staying hydrated, and rinsing off dusty feet super convenient. More importantly though, the views are incredible! Some of us even woke up early to catch the sunrise over the mountains and it was beyond beautiful (I'm not a morning person, but believe me it was worth it!). The main house is far enough away from the campsite that it feels like you've got the place to yourself in the evenings. We could keep the fire and conversation going late without worrying that we were keeping Betsy and Michael up. When we saw them around the farm during the day they were so friendly and helpful! We're so thankful they encouraged us to take a dip in their pond because it was the perfect way to cool down after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park. Highly recommend Over Jordan Farm!
The best about Over The Jordon...
1. 270 degree views on the hill
2. Amazing sunrises
3. Breezes on a hot summer day
4. Privacy and solitude
5. Farm fresh eggs and meat
To consider when booking...
1. Your car is not parked at or next to the site but a 6-7 minute round trip walk to the barn.
2. The privy is a 7-8 minute round trip walk from the site. You can pee and poop at the site but you must use LNT practices, cat holing and pack out your toilet paper.
3. The shower, sink and composting toilet is a 20 minute round trip walk to the site.
We had a wonderful stay at OJF—Betsy and her husband were the most welcoming hosts—showing us their farm and how things work, telling us where the best hikes were, setting up fantastic fire pits for us each day, and leaving us fresh eggs from their chickens for breakfast. The views are stunning, and it is the perfect getaway to the mountains with only your party allowed on the land. The town nearby is great and the cafe is super for a coffee and sandwich as well!
What an incredible place to stay! I brought five friends here for a quick weekend getaway out of the city. We stayed two nights, and had so much fun. Mike and Betsy were so accommodating. They even let us eat fresh eggs for breakfast! We camped in tents and had a perfect view of the field the sheep were in — given the time of year we saw tons of lambs. We spent Saturday hiking beyond the property to the Shenandoah National Park, and got on the Appalachian trail briefly.
The property is gorgeous, and Mike provided us with firewood for the entire weekend. We loved the views and the animals. Mike even gave us some great info about the land, livestock, and how the farm operates. The property and experience were even better than we anticipated. I would highly recommend Over Jordan Farm to anyone looking for a beautiful private campsite!
Betsy has a stunning property and the foothills of the Shenandoah National Park. The scenery from the camp site is gorgeous. Our kids loved running around the farm, exploring the swimming pond and creek and playing with the various animals. Betsy and Mike were very friendly and eager to make us feel welcome. Free farm fresh eggs were a real treat for breakfast. Overall we spent a perfect weekend at Over Jordan Farm.
We had an amazing time camping in the beautiful area nestled between your barn and the amazing Mountain Views. The amenities such as the swimming pond, outdoor shower, firewood, fire pit and super nice host that showed us our private space made for a unique and one of a kind adventure with our family and friends. You were very gracious and your scenic views and spectacular woods and farmland make for a perfect backdrop to a fun camping weekend of lasting memories! We highly recommend Over Jordan Farm to families that want a relaxing and scenic camping weekend! We loved getting our morning breakfast of eggs at the hen house! The kids loved that! Thank you
Betsy and Michael are the perfect hosts. Our family of 5 had such a wonderful time staying at Over Jordan Farm. The property is idyllic with beautiful green rolling hills, fields and sheep, cows, chickens and dogs Sabir and Hudson. Our girls enjoyed roaming around the property. The campsite is on a small hill with a great view of the land. There was firewood provided by our hosts and two large tree stumps and logs to use as a table and chairs. A picnic table would be a nice addition to the site. We were offered fresh eggs every morning. I cannot recommend this place enough.
