Setup your tent and enjoy some respite before and after exploring the beautiful canyons and desert landscapes that surround the Desert Moon and beyond. We have 2 showers, bathrooms, potable water, picnic tables, and wifi on site. There is also a covered seating area for guest use by our Inn. There are 5 campsites total. Please note, the Union Pacific Railroad is right across the street, with trains passing by multiple times a day and night. There will be noise at night. Campsites are relatively close together so you will likely see other campers during your stay. Also, there is not a lot of shade on the property so be prepared. Thompson Springs began as a railroad stop on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in the mid to late 1800's. It soon became a shipping point and community center for local farmers, cattle ranchers and sheepherders. It is now a ghost-town with a population of 50 people. The Desert Moon has a true wild western past. The old dancehall on the property, The Cactus Caberet, once served as the town bar and brothel. We are currently in the process renovating the dancehall into a venue for live music and retreats. There are 8-12 staff members living on site in their personal RV's at all times. We are a small community of artists, builders, and adventurers. We are constantly working to improve this property that came under our ownership in July of 2020. Feel free to come say hello and ask us about what we are building here! Thompson Springs is a true "ghost town" with no retail or restaurants except a 7-11 off the I-70 exit. The towns of Moab and Green River are only a half hour drive away and are full of regional and eclectic restaurants and shops. The Desert Moon is located just four miles from the Sego Canyon Rock Art in the Bookcliffs featuring pictograph and petroglyph panels from three different Native American cultures: Barrier, Fremont, and Ute. Be sure to check them out! There are miles of off-road trails accessible from our property. Some require a 4x4 vehicle or dirtbike, but many are well maintained enough for almost any vehicle.Setup your tent and enjoy some respite before exploring the beautiful canyons and desert landscapes that surround the Desert Moon and beyond. We have 2 showers/bathrooms and potable water on site. The Desert Moon has been serving the greater Moab area since the coal mining days of the mid 1930's. Desert Moon Tent Camping
Lovely and unique camping spot! The views of the sunset and stars were beautiful. The showers and toilets were clean and a great plus to camping outdoors.

Desert Moon Tent Camping
This place had pros and cons. Pros: Location is fairly close to Arches and Canyonlands (Island in the Sky) and the full bathrooms and local artwork were great. The lights in the trees which were pretty at night. The sites also all have a fire ring and a picnic table and plenty of room (due to length) for both a tent and a vehicle. Instant booking is great for last minute plans. Cons: I wouldn't recognize this place from the pictures. The pictures are all wide open spaces and beautiful views, but they have filled up a lot of the campground with little buildings and vintage campers and it looked junky to me rather than picturesque. The 5 sites that are still there for camping were all very narrow. I felt really bad when I was up at 4:30 am starting my car as I was packing / getting ready for my sunrise visit to arches. I just knew I was waking up the tent campers to my right. There is a train nearby which, because I camped in my car, didn't bother me too much but in a tent I could see how it would not be ideal. I tried connecting to the wifi a few times and the network never shows up on the list of available networks. Cell service was weak and spotty. I would stay here again if I were planning a last minute trip, but if planning in advance, I would probably try to find somewhere with better views and more space. And if tent camping, without a train nearby.

Desert Moon Tent Camping
Eclectic
Convenient en route to Santa Fe. Eclectic hippie Gypsy vibe. We did not meet the host. There is a loud train periodically. Very unique spot with lots of “trinkets” scattered about. Windy this time of year. Too much for a campfire. We would probably stay again or drive a bit farther to Moab.

Desert Moon Tent Camping
We enjoyed our stay tent camping! We had a nice fire pit and a little grill and loved all the seating. The bathroom was super cute and nice to have a real toilet and sink. The only thing that didn’t seem to work so well was the pump for the potable water, but that didn’t bother us too much. Loved the twinkle lights too.

Great stay!
We loved our stay at the Desert Moon. The site was level for our sprinter van and bathrooms and showers were clean and convenient. Very peaceful property with great star gazing!
