Hello there!
Welcome to our Hipcamp. We are excited that you are here!
Do you love the outdoors or have a strong nostalgia for camp days? The property that Wellspring Mountain sits on has been a place of respite and retreat for many a soul for the last 75 years. This property was once an apple orchard, then a wilderness therapy camp, and now home to Wellspring Mountain and the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine.
The mountain itself has the geographical name of Saddle Mountain and sits right on the Blue Ridge Parkway at its peak. Wellspring Mountain itself sits at the base of Saddle Mountain. It’s as if we are being hugged by what so many people refer to as Mamma Mountain. The forest is alive with many species of plants, fungi, and wildlife, and the cool creeks and streams provide fresh spring water to all its inhabitants and are protected by Piedmont Land Conservancy. What a beautiful piece of earth that we have been chosen to caretake. Our goal here on the mountain is to share this wonderful piece of heaven with other outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers!
As I mentioned before the facilities here were home to a boys camp for over 30 years. The camp closed and set empty for almost 5 years before we came along.
We are a very small staff and have been working diligently for 6 years now to restore and remodel the facilities. While they are in much better condition today there are still many plans in the works!
Some folks have asked us about trails. We have two trails on the property, however, one of the trails is being worked on right now. We will let our guests know as soon as it is repaired.
We are only a 10-mile drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway ( or technically one could scramble up the mountain to the parkway:-) The road to our driveway is part of the Surry County Scenic Bicycle Trail and there are miles of biking, hiking, and paddling within 20 miles of camp.
If you are looking for a fishing hole there are many around! The drive to Fisher River recreational park is part of the Surry County Scenic Trail and is a great place to spend the day fishing for trout!
We are also right in the middle of wine country. You can add on a wine tour and we will arrange for one of our staff to chauffeur you to some of the most beautiful wineries around.
There are so many outdoor and recreational spaces here for you and your family to explore. We have a visitor area in the office buildings and will be happy to give you more recommendations while you are here, although, once you are here you may want to stay on the mountain to explore and relax.

Glamping Tent Nestled in the Forest
in Greenheart Place, North CarolinaCompletely unwind
Where should I start? Greenheart Forest is a magical place. We could feel the thoughtfulness and intention put into every design, from the unique artistry of the lodge to the small hidden garden paths. Plants, animals, and fungi thrive here in this lush piece of HEAVEN ON EARTH. From the moment Thomas and I arrived, I could feel the stress I had been carrying just roll off of me. We haven't been camping in a while, so Thomas and I chose the glamping tent to ease ourselves back into it. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Jim and Kulani who gave us a hand-drawn map of the camp and even walked us to our site giving helpful tips along the way. The walk from the parking lot to the glamping tent is a nice 100-200 ft walk past an outdoor kitchen (they are currently working on) and the serene meditation gardens. We were able to drive halfway to our site to unload some things before returning our vehicle back to the parking area for the night.
The glamping tent was perfect! There are two comfy twin-size beds, two camping chairs, and a table inside this large tent! Just a short walk up to the left of the tent is a nice fire ring and a picnic table where I shared my morning coffee time with Sunny the big lab puppy! What a sweety!
There is no flushing toilet near the site but back at the lodge, there is a bathroom and a warm shower. The walk is quite nice, and I found something new to take a picture of each time I made it (not to mention gathering fresh blueberries)!
During our short stay, we had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Jennette, David, and Philip about their journeys and roles and the creation of this beautiful vision and place.
On our last day there David took us to the Greenheart Forest Farm and gave us a lovely tour of the permaculture gardens and charming cabins and barns being designed and built in a sustainable and conscious manner.
What a wonderful experience and an awe-inspiring camping adventure! We will definitely be staying in touch with all the folks at Greenheart Forest and look forward to coming back when we can stay a bit longer. Thank you all! We love what you are doing. Keep up the good (hard) work! It is needed and appreciated. #glampinggreenheartforest
