Death Valley Stargazing Camp
in Death Valley Stargazing Camp, CaliforniaBeautiful remote campsite! It was an amazing location with views of huge mountains behind you, open desert in front of you, and incredibly dark skies at night. Portos were clean, though one of three had blown over — looks like the ropes holding it down had snapped! Our first night there had extreme winds, I have a very sturdy canvas tent but smaller tents without decent stakes might not have survived. Do note that there’s approx 8 miles of dirt/gravel road to get there, most of which is decent, but right before the campsite is a stretch of soft sand followed by slightly more rough rocks. In addition it’s surrounded by BLM land which I believe is free to camp on, but you lose out on portos and nicely maintained campsites with table and fire pits. We also saw a few wild donkeys on our way in!
