Past trip
in Reverse Pioneers Hilltop, TexasA lovely getaway from city life
WE LOVED THIS SPOT! Directions were easy and straightforward. We pulled up to our site and were so pleased right off the bat. The fire pit was impressively built, there are large flat open spaces to set up, and plenty of privacy from all of the bamboo. We had to search for the private hiking trail at first but once we found it, it was easy to follow. Nothing crazy but it will give you a beautiful view of the sunset.
Once we set up, we were able to relax and enjoy the quiet. There are a few neighboring dogs that bark here and there, but nothing too bothersome. There are goats, chickens and cows nearby, which I enjoyed listening to, as well as plenty of birds and other wildlife.
The composting toilet was clean and adorable! I loved the little twinkle lights that guide you to it at night. Such a lovely perk.
Tips: bring LOTS of firewood and a cooking grate, earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Put your trash and food up at night, since we heard some visitors come in the middle of the night but were not an issue at all.
All in all, we were extremely pleased with our stay and with it only being an hour drive from Austin, we will certainly be back!

(Dispersed site)
On our way in, we already had a feeling of uneasiness as we passed by the junk yards full of trash and unfriendly stares. The site was relatively easy to find and the gate was easy to unlock and enter. We pulled through to our site, only to discover huge piles of cow feces all over our area, flies galore, a bin full of smelly trash, and zero privacy. What the beautiful photos don’t show is that the neighboring property is in full view of your site, at least in the winter when all of the leaves have fallen off the trees. The camp site we were at didn’t have the nice man-made fire pit and was right next to a paid boat ramp, which was highly active with people dropping their boats in and out of the river. We could also clearly see the other camper’s site. Since the leaves have fallen, there is no privacy for using the restroom and I didn’t feel safe hiking into the back of the property. We tried to make the best of it and pitched our tent and tried to relax but the cows came too close to our site, so we had to have our guard up and shoo them away as to not have anymore smelly cow turds where we were eating. Soon after, two random dogs came over to our site and would not leave us alone. We decided that we didn’t even want to stay the night and ended up going home. Thankfully it’s only 15 min away from our place. Would have been extremely disappointed if we had driven an hour out. Overall it’s certainly a place to camp, just not the secluded get away the pictures seemed to show.
