WARNING: We can't accommodate rigs with a total length longer than 28 feet at this time unless you make special arrangements and we assist you with parking.

Google maps will take you to our mail boxes at 1517 County Road 353, Merkel, TX 79536. It is at the top of a little hill. There is a large sign indicating our Lightning Ranch turn on the opposite side of the road from the mail boxes.

From the intersection of County road 360 and 353 we are 1.5 miles to the west. From the intersection of Highway 126 and county road 353 we are 1.75 miles to the east.

Once at the mail boxes labeled 1517 turn north (only possibility) and then turn right (east) at the hip camp sign, several hundred feet down the ranch road into the camping area. Sites 1-6 are labeled on markers to your right. If you don't see the numbered campground markers you are not at our Hipcamp!!

You will be camping in a fairly level grassy area among mesquite, Juniper and cedar trees with easy access to our red and green colored mesas and arroyos. The canyons have streams with running water during and right after rain storms. But this is mostly dry semi arid desert country with many different kinds of thorny plants and cactus. The blossoms are beautiful, especially the Yuccas, in the spring starting in late March through May. We have many types of birds including hawks, owls and roadrunners. Bobcats, wild hogs, deer, coyotes, foxes, raccoons and opossums also share the ranch. There is great county road bicycling on paved roads with almost no traffic.

This is primitive dry camping and currently there are no bathrooms, showers or potable water. The county road is paved and the ranch access road is caliche. But during rainy periods the hip camp road can become muddy so minimize driving.

To get to the Skyhouse continue north on the ranch road beyond the Hipcamp for about 1/4 mile and then turn right over the cattle guard at the Y which is marked with a Lightning Ranch sign and continue a little further to the Skyhouse.

In an emergency the Skyhouse is where you can get potable water, use a bathroom and get WiFi. We also give tours of the ranch including our regenerative agriculture and natural earthbag and earthship home building.

It was a great camping spot! Soft ground, very secluded from any other visitors or traffic. The sky was clear and almost every star visible. Richard was kind enough to walk me through the wonderful property he has there. There's a gorgeous ravine about 100yds from the campsite that he took me through. He's a great host!

What a perfect spot to camp as I was driving across the country! The property is beautiful (thanks for the tour!) and idea for a regenerative farming community is inspiring. Quiet, safe, and easy place to camp under the stars.

Richard's place (both Hipcamp and Airbnb, and wellness center in the works) is a must do! After a long trip, I slept soundly listening to gentle sounds of nature and feeling safe and secure in my dedicated spot. On the property are excellent walking trails and one of the most amazing Earthships, which Richard - a true pioneer in that regard - built back in the 1950s! Also amazing to see are the additional architectual (and other wonders) in progress, all moving towards a wellness center in the works. Wow, this Hipcamp was a real privilege to experience and I am grateful to the host for making it so exceptional! If you can make the trip, check it out!

Very easy to find. Well marked directions and campsite numbers were a nice touch. Worked well as a quick stopover on a long drive.

Our stay on Richard's land was quick, so we did not get a chance to see the amazing things it sounds like he has going on. However, we did have a lovely comfortable stay. Richard was very responsive and helpful, and we enjoyed the land!

Roman, on of the helpers was incredibly friendly and fun to talk to! The campsite was nice and there was plenty of wildlife all around. Little bunnies everywhere. Overall great experience
