Reserved sites are accessible by 2-wheel drive vehicles, as well as many RVs, and campers. If you have questions about accessibility for your specific rig, please contact the host. Sites are marked with stakes, please refer to the aerial map in the photos for site numbers and locations.

The property consists of 40 acres of rough desert terrain. Mostly flat, sloping down from FM 170 to the Rio Grande. Certified as a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Reserve for perfect stargazing and great views of the Milky Way.  Presidio is a beautiful 20 min drive away if you need to pick up supplies. Wildlife is abundant, but elusive; enjoy any sightings. There are several excellent marked sites for drive up camping, easily accessible in almost any vehicle.

Please remember that help is not easy to come by if you get a vehicle stuck. You're welcome to roam the land and explore, just remember to leave no trace and respect the property. This is a harsh desert environment and can be disorienting. Bring plenty of water, don't explore beyond your capabilities.

The campsite was just what we were looking for. It was very private, had a great view, and was accessible by car. We camped on site 1, which is large, level, and well-maintained. The highway is seldom travelled, so there is no problem with road noise. Also, though site one is one of the closest to the highway, you can’t see the road from it.

Though we chose Rancho del Malpache because it was near Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park, we really enjoyed exploring the immediate area, too. The landscape is beautiful. We look forward to returning in the future.

Beautiful scenery, great hiking, very quiet and secluded. I’ve never seen that many stars in the sky before, it was incredible! Not to mention Jupiter and Saturn converged during our stay. What a wonderful piece of land!

We staid here on our way to Chinati Hot Springs - a beautiful spot if you want to go away from everything. We parked with our Camper Van close to the street to avoid the thorny bushes and sand, but you can walk further into the property with great views, great places to camp in solitude.

Solitude and quietness

Very quiet area with expansive solitude. Vehicle maneuverability on the property is limited in that the primitive road is short with encroaching thick & thorny desert brush. The paved road along the frontage is minimally travelled & visits to town, State Park & National Park requires appropriate planning due to remoteness.

As of January 2021, we have somewhat improved vehicle maneuverability at sites on the East side of the property. We are still working on access to the Western side toward the border, but progress is being made!

Great silence and solitude. I would have liked being able to travel throughout the property to the Rio Grande but the primitive road only goes about 75 yards and then is impassable because of thick brush or soft sand and erosion. The location is about 30 minutes from conveniences and 60 minutes to the west-side of Big Bend State Park and about 2 hours to the west entrance of Big Bend NP. Hardly any vehicle traffic on the road going by the property which is wonderful!

Keep checking back with us, Peter. We are working on a trail system to open up the rest of the property all the way to the river (when there is a river). Thanks so much for camping with us!
