The 13-acre park at Hidalgo Falls is owned by the Texas Rivers Protection Association. It is located on the Brazos River about eight miles from Navasota. TRPA ownership of this property guarantees access to this popular and unique river resource. For whitewater paddlers, it offers a class II rapid with numerous surfing waves, holes, eddy lines and play spots. For flatwater paddlers, it provides a convenient and secure access point for float trips along a very historic stretch of the Brazos as well as a place to learn swiftwater techniques and rescue skills. In the four miles downstream from the rapid archaeologists have unearthed mastodon bones from the riverbank, and the remains of  an early 20th century lock and dam system still loom large in the river. All of this is just upstream from Washington on the Brazos State Park, birthplace of the republic of Texas. Stephen F. Austin is said to have crossed the river often at Hidalgo Falls. It is also said that you could tell if you had a knowledgeable riverboat captain if he could get his boat upstream of the rapid and back down before the river level dropped stranding the boat upriver near Millican or Port Sullivan. The fast moving water and play features of the rapid are rarities in this part of the state. During the year volunteer fire departments in the region use the falls for training firefighters in swiftwater rescue. A 2 mile hike and bike trail are being worked on now and will soon open. Volunteers are always welcome!Rare access to the Brazos River and just a few feet from Hidalgo Falls, paddling and exploring the river are the most popular activities. Photography, bird-watching and campfires are also on the list. Each site has a picnic table that seats 4 comfortably and accommodates one tent & one vehicle. If more tents or vehicles, please reserve additional sites or contact owner for clarification. There is a shared cement block BBQ pit centrally located. If it rains, the road in may be muddy and cars with low clearance may get stuck. We recommend SUVs or trucks, or waiting till it dries out (usually a day or 2) to come in. All vehicles should stay in the tracks and not veer around puddles. No one has gotten stuck in the puddles, but trying to avoid them puts the vehicle in soft mud.

Shaded campground on the Brazos R.
Not the best way to do business
Do not recommend this place. If it rains you have to have a 4WD to be able to make it to the campground it is like a half mile drive in the mud. Also even though IT IS advertised as 70$ for a group of 4 they will tell you when you are packing up that its 70$ for 2 people that you now have to pay extra. Not the best way to do business.

Couldn’t access site - stuck in mud
We were 3 minutes away from our site when we got stuck in the mud on Camp Rd. The mud caused our vehicle to veer off the road and get stuck, and then we had to get towed out (the first two tow trucks called would not drive on the road due to the mud - only the the third tow truck called had 4WD and would help us). Once unstuck, we did not attempt to proceed to the site but instead decided to return home to Houston. On the way out on Camp Rd, the mud again caused our vehicle to veer off and get stuck, and the tow truck had to pull us out again. The Host refused to give a refund (the Manager knew of the poor road conditions and did not provide advance warning, nor did the site listing indicate that 4WD was required), but instead offered a free night in the future. We will not return, however, because there is no guarantee that road conditions will be better when we have the time to go camping.

Shady Camping, Great River Access
Beautiful, quiet area with easy access to the Brazos river. Spent one quick night here on the way to our final destination, but would love to return to spend more time. Patti was very kind and easy to communicate with. Hope to return soon!
