HOT WATER SHOWERS, running water, THREE flush toilets, electrical outlets, device chargers, full kitchen, refrigerator, coffee maker, safe & easy campsite access, all make our remote, off grid campground exceptional in this area!

Our ranch is located around five miles from the main highway and about 25 miles from the gate into Big Bend National Park. We are very secluded & private, with virtually no nighttime "light pollution", so you can view our awesome night sky. This, plus our location, affords a 360 degree panoramic view of the legendary Big Bend night sky. Spectacular views of many mountains are in every direction, with 4885' Agua Fria dominating from about five miles to the southwest. But your views extend up to 50 miles, so most of the area mountains can be seen and enjoyed from here.

New in 2022 is our desert wetlands. We have dammed our 12-acre arroyo, which has created a reservoir of water for many months after even a small rain event. Local wildlife flocks to this area in the evenings, as do migratory birds. When there is sufficient water, guests may enjoy wading and swimming in a part of the lake as well.

The new rental rooms have been built like most of our compound, using reused/repurposed/recycled materials, to be comfortable areas to be out of the elements! We are very proud of these rooms, as they fill a needed, low cost niche in the area, a well as offer amenities not found in other off-grid spaces. Each room offers  two double bed futons (you will need to provide your own bedding), a desk, a ceiling fan, a 110 volt AC plug, as well as USB & 12 volt plugs so you can charge & use your devices in your WIFI enabled room.  You will also have complete access to the bathrooms and kitchen located a few feet away from your door.

They are designed to be more like "youth hostel" spaces and less like motel rooms. These two rooms are 8' x 10' in size. This not a huge room, but comfortable for a couple.  We recommend occupancy of these rooms for not more than two adults and two children. Guests are limited to four per room.

There is no air conditioning in them, as this is an off-grid ranch and air conditioning takes too much power from the system. Each room has a ceiling fan however. Each room has a propane heater, however we do not provide propane for heat at these prices. You may bring your own or buy some from us. We cannot offer, nor allow electric heaters as they will drain our power system. The bathhouse/kitchen (read below) are a few feet from your door and all access, are free of additional charge.

Sunrise at the Eco-Ranch is a spectacular event, made more quaint by the gentle crowing of our roosters, who sometimes think sunrise is arriving far earlier. You are a distance from them though! Sunset is the same. The campground has uninhibited views of both events and if you are lucky enough to be here during the 3-4 days of the full moon, moonrise is a once-in-a-lifetime event!

We offer a toilet/bath house/kitchen facility. In addition to the flush toilets, which are a rarity in area campgrounds, we installed an on demand hot water supply for the shower, so that you could enjoy a hot shower! (showers are $5 per shower, per person)  The lighted kitchen features a two burner propane stove, full-sized double sink, small refrigerator, coffee maker (free coffee), counter space, cookware & place settings, along with USB, 12 volt & 110 volt ac plugs with a counter to place your devices on while charging.

Just a warning though, bringing and using additional high demand appliances, like a bigger heater, portable AC unit, or induction cooker, WILL cause the system to shut down. Please do not do that!

This is a 100% off-grid working poultry/goat/aquaponics ranch! We usually have fresh eggs, seasonal vegetables and even poultry meat available for you to purchase.

Roosters will crow & geese will honk. These sounds can carry, so be aware of that! Kids will love the fact that all our animals are tame and the barnyard is a wonderful "petting zoo" experience for them! Gardeners will love the 1600 square foot greenhouse with its 4000 gallon aquaponics system. and year around, seasonal produce.

Hikers can explore many miles of road, but must bear in mind that in Texas, ALL land is privately owned and you must be respectful of that at all times. We are also 3 miles from a spring-fed "swimming hole" that may be enjoyed, so long as you respect the land and pack out what you pack in while hiking in the area.

The Big Bend Parks are about 25 miles from here. The McDonald Observatory is about 100 miles from here and the mysterious "Marfa Lights" about 80 miles from us....... but still close enough that some stray into view at times, depending on your alcohol intake.

As stated, this is also a working poultry & goat farm and we have to attend to our farm as our first priority. This requires our attention in the early morning and into the evening. WE STRONGLY URGE CAMPERS TO ARRIVE BEFORE DARK!!!

However, we realize that many people have time management issues and have made some allowance for the rare late arrival. So if you plan on leaving home late and arriving here late, you will need to contact us for instructions. You will also need to select a site on arrival in the "upper campground", nearest the bath house, so you do not disturb other campers.

EVERY SITE is spacious and a good distance from others, unintentionally, but effectively: "SOCIAL DISTANCED"! Both Robert & Debbie are fully vaccinated against Covid. We will not require proof of vaccination, but do request that all guests who are not vaccinated, respect mainstream science & medicine and wear masks, or keep your distance.

Our entire property is a NO FIREARMS ZONE. We DO NOT allow firearms (or fireworks) on the property and NO ONE may carry one on their person while on our property. (If you insist on having a firearm with you, just lock it IN YOUR VEHICLE when on the property!!!!)

Your great reviews have placed us as "finalists" in the rankings for "The Best Campground In Texas" for the last two years running!  OUTSIDE MAGAZINE recently ranked us the BEST HIPCAMP CAMPGROUND near Big Bend National Park as well!

This is a unique place. The setting is beautiful! The weekend we were there it was a full Moon, that lit up the whole valley. We stayed it the shack, very comfortable. The nights were surprisingly cool. The hosts were friendly and helpful. There was a minor issue with the power in our lodging at night, but the host fixed it quickly, after being a little grumpy, but he fixed right away. It's all good. Their kitchen is well supplied. French press was awesome. Showers were great! Lady host very knowledgeable about area and so helpful. She told us funny stories about her cats. Overall A+.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who, like me, loves quirky and is open to a new experience. I loved being in the middle of the desert. I was in a room, not camping, but that would be cool too. The hosts were so nice. They are doing an admirable job of living off the grid self-sustainably. Although this is not for those who cannot do without all their creature comforts, that is clear from the get-go. The advance information is clear and the ensuing communication really good.

A gorgeous sunset. Desert around the site. More surrounding scenery. A little humor down the road.

Robert Earl is a wonderful teacher of ecology and sustainability. The no frills accommodations met all our needs. We stayed in one of the two rooms. It had two comfortable full size futon beds. We loved the tour of the greenhouse and learned a great deal about aquaponics, winter gardens, raising chickens and geese and living off the grid in the desert with renewable energy and little water.

Robert and Debbie were fantastic hosts. If you want to get off the grid in Terlingua Ranch, this is the place. The long dirt road might seem intimidating but you’re rewarded with a destination that looks like Tatooine from Star Wars. Eating dinner next to a campfire and watching the sunset then full moon rise was magical. The facilities are spartan but better than you’d find in a state park in Vermont.

It was 80 degrees and I was exploring the area in my dual sport motorcycle. The next day was snow and temps in the 20’s. If you come to the desert in winter, be prepared. The two rooms have good propane heaters though so you’ll be nice and cozy.

I highly recommend this place to others who want to enjoy this beautiful landscape.

Thank you Robert and Debbie!

Although the site wasn't the easiest to get to, it was such an AMAZING stay. Robert was extremely helpful and accommodating. The stars were beautiful and the fire wood was some of the best we've ever hand. Thanks so much!

Robert and Debbie are living off the grid and sharing their amazing location and ethos--don't miss the opportunity to catch their spirit! It's super fun and interesting to see all they are doing. And for your personal experience, you'll be hard pressed to find a better laid back, dark skies location. We had a magical night under the stars, and the sunrise was spectacular.

VERY IMPORTANT: read everything. It's a lot. But if you do, you'll be prepared for directions (download them, no cell service for miles) and what to bring. Someone stole their chairs, so bring camp chairs! We stayed in the rooms. Bring bedding! The kitchen was adequate, indoor bath good.

All in all, thumbs up!
