Primitive camping
Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
Located just 2 miles off I-10, 8 miles to the West of Sierra Blanca, and 80 miles South/South-East of El Paso. This property is truly a part of the "OLD WEST". Sierra Blanca was named after Sierra Blanca Mountain, just North-West of town. The town came into existence when competing railroads for a second (Southern) transcontinental railroad line came within 10 miles of one another in 1881. Jay Gould, famous railroad magnate and robber baron, drove a silver spike commemorating the event on Dec. 15th 1881. The town sprang up around that spot, although the population didn't reach 350 people until 1914. It is best described as grazing land that is flat to slightly sloping terrain covered with desert sagebrush and grasses. Learn more about this land: Primitive campsites offer nice views, solitude, and a small flat space to set up camp next to your vehicle. No shade, toilets (bring your own), or other amenities are provided at this time but are in the works. Sierra Blanca has mild winters and very hot summers but the desert can get cold at night. The weather is generally sunny but come prepared for changing conditions. This is not a commercial campground. Site is great for large groups. Larger RVs have trouble turning or parking so please no rvs over 26 ft. Bring your own toilet. Wildlife include rabbits and hares, javelina, woodcock, teal, sandhill crane, quail, pronghorn, mule deer, duck, dove, rattlesnake, rails, gallinules, and moorehens, toads and a variety of lizards. We are not a commercial campground. Exactly as expected!
We struggled a bit with the directions in the dark, but that was mostly user error. Beautiful patch of desert with a barrel for trash and one for a fire pit with plenty of bullet holes for airflow to get a nice burn going.

It was perfect for me and my situation. I was on the road gor 12 hours and it was nice to have a safe spot to pull off the road and pitch my tent. Host gives specific directions on how to find the campgrounds, so read the directions! It's just a spot to pitch a tent and some bins to light a fire. That's pretty much it. But, I loved it. The stars came out around 12 am and it was beautiful

West Texas blowout
Extremely high winds kept us from camping the night we reserved. Spent a disappointing night in Van Horn instead. Good thing, the winds really blew through town, would have taken the top off my camper. We drove over the next morning to check it out, The road is a bit rough and no where to turn around if you have a trailer. It would have been a great place to spend the evening and wake up the next morning out in the desert looking at Sierra Blanca (Mt). Annie was very helpful in our correspondences. Not exactly sure where the “campsites” actually are, but there is unlimited room to pull off the dirt road. We will try again on our next trip out. Very convenient to I-10.

Not a happy camper.
NOT SUITABLE FOR LARGE RV’s, especially towing a car. The road in was horrible and damaged the towed car. There is no place to turn around. We unloaded the car, disconnected the tow dolly, and with much effort got the RV turned around. No way to get off the “road” so camped on it. On the positive side, the location was convenient to I 10 and had good cell service.

Good quick stop, avoid with travel
The site was great if you have a tent. Be aware, this is a straight out (narrow) dirt road with no turnaround to speak of. If you have a travel trailer or RV probably should avoid unless they clear a turnaround for you, the road out is quite rough and if your trailer does not have high clearance, it will get stuck. It was good, and close to the highway not far enough.
