Overview

About

History buffs flock to Guernsey State Park, southeastern Wyoming’s hub for relics of the past. The grounds contain some of the best examples of Oregon Trail wagon ruts in the country, as well as Register Cliff—this giant slab of flat stone served as a marker for travelers along the Oregon Trail, who carved their names on the stone to keep a record of their arrival and help keep others on course (many are still there). Ten miles of hiking trails will take you to views of the Guernsey Reservoir, surrounded by canyon-like stone walls. The park has seven camping areas, five of which are right on the water, and a few with wonderful yurts available. Everyone from fly fishers to waterskiers can enjoy the smooth, tranquil waters here, where quiet and peace of mind are of the essence.

When to go

Guernsey State Park is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is from late spring to early fall. During these months, the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Winter can be harsh, with some facilities closed, so check ahead if you plan a cold-weather adventure.

Know before you go

  • Check weather conditions before your visit, as the park's terrain can be challenging in inclement weather.
  • Be aware of park hours, typically from 8:30am to 5pm, and plan your activities within this timeframe.
  • Remember to pack out your trash and keep the park clean for everyone to enjoy.
  • Some areas may be inaccessible to those with mobility issues, so inquire ahead about accessibility options.
  • Bring all necessary supplies, as amenities may be limited depending on the season and area of the park.
