Overview

About

The Kenai Peninsula has been home to humans for more than 8,000 years, and it’s easy to see why. The waters are teeming with salmon and other fish, and you can still fish these bountiful waters for king salmon today. However, you won’t have to attempt to survive the elements—just come on down for some outdoor fun! Crooked Creek State Recreation Area is an easy peasy walk from where Crooked Creek and the Kasilof River merge. Camp out at one of the 80 campsites, or just come and play for the day (there are 36 day use parking spots). This place fills up in May and June, so don’t anticipate tons of solitude. However, spring, fall, and summer also have their own perks, and it isn’t just about the fish! Moose, black and brown bear, and more also call this special place home. Just be sure to keep your camp cleaned up—the critters often have the munchies.

Notable campgrounds

  • Riverfront Retreat: Wake to the sound of the Kasilof River at one of the prime riverfront campsites, perfect for anglers and nature lovers alike.
  • Forest Haven: Nestled among towering trees, this campground offers a serene setting and a chance to spot local wildlife.
  • Starlight Canopy: Ideal for stargazers, this campsite provides a clear view of the night sky, unobstructed by artificial light.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially if you're planning to visit during the peak salmon fishing season in May and June.
  • Consider mid-week stays for better availability and a quieter camping experience.
  • Check the park's website for cancellations to snag a last-minute spot.
  • Explore nearby camping options if Crooked Creek is fully booked, ensuring you don't miss out on the region's natural beauty.

When to go

The best time to visit Crooked Creek State Recreation Site is during May and June for king salmon fishing. However, summer months offer sockeye and silver salmon, along with Dolly Varden. Wildlife is abundant year-round, but be mindful of the early winter closures due to weather conditions.

Know before you go

  • Always maintain a safe distance from wildlife and store food securely to prevent bear encounters.
  • Check the park's website for the latest trail condition reports and campground open status.
  • Accessibility is a priority, with ADA facilities and trails available for all visitors to enjoy.
  • Remember to purchase an annual parking pass if you plan on multiple visits throughout the year.
  • For any inquiries or assistance, contact the park's office between 8:30am to 5pm.
