Perfect trip! Winter camping is always cold, but this location was spectacular! A private little spot away from the chaos of the world around us. Daniel was fantastic about responding to questions and concerns immediately. An amazing trip and host... We will be booking again this summer!
Very backwoods, as advertised!
Beatiful, crazy views, bring binoculars for sure. Very quiet, remote, out of the way, great basecamp for day trips! Will definitely return. I was very impressed by how clean the land was - I found a single Clif bar wrapper and a twist-tie, nothing else to suggest others' use of the land.
The tract is big enough that you can definitely move camp and get a variety of experiences if that's your thing - I settled on the little saddle about halfway in, on the longer/main access road, but also spent one night up higher before it got windy.
Things that are good to know: There's not much activity up and down this road. Nearest pavement is pretty far away. Closest Verizon coverage is at hwy 385, near the Sugar Shack. I was fine with this - I had been seeking to get unplugged anyway, so no big deal. There's no water at all onsite, and I saw no signs of people burying human waste (I carried mine all out, sorry if TMI but I would encourage others to do the same).
No lights were visible at night although there are a few summer homes along the river, way down the hill towards the east and south. Just pure darkness and quiet.
Dan was always very quick and helpful with responses.
Gorgeous, peaceful and private
Daniel’s land was the perfect camping spot in the Black Hills! As experienced backpackers, this felt like backpacking (ie utter solitude) but you have all the conveniences of having your car right there. The views from the property are GORGEOUS, and it takes about 10 miles of driving on winding dirt roads to get to the site with scenery everywhere. We found drinking water from a pump at the George S. Mickelson trailhead about a mile from camp, which was super convenient for refilling all our water bottles and camelbacks every day on the way out to our adventures. The Wilderness is the perfect base camp spot and we are already talking of making this an annual camping spot for our little family ☺️
