Heavily forested mountain property is waaay off the grid and it neighbors National Forest, so enjoy hiking, climbing, hamacking, watching wild animals, star gazing at night (breath-taking), but no sounds of the city.

All campsites are spaced far enough from each other that you won't see other campers/campsites, although you may see them on the trails.

Great and remote location. We drove a high clearance 4x4 but a capable driver non 4x4 standard clearance vehicle could make it, with cautious and smart driving practices.

My group had the pleasure of meeting Matt and only had kind things to say about him! He provides plenty of information about how to get to the sites. It’s an interesting spot, feels very remote and the nearby lake is quite fun. The walk from the parking spot to the site was definitely an experience but honestly added to it all. This is a great spot with a great host.

Hey Hilary, so glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm not often on the mountain, so it was fun to meet up with some of your party as they made their way in.

My friends and I loved this site!! The drive up was beautiful, and the site itself was clean, well laid out, private, and had stunning views. We underestimated the commute and made it JUST before dark, but navigation on-site was simple with our flashlights and the motion lights placed on the trail. Trust in Matt’s directions and you’ll get there just fine! I’d say the camp was about an hour from baker city, so be prepared for that drive.

Awesome Maggie! Glad you loved camping at Towering Tamaracks. Yeah, it gets pretty dark out there at night, so I'm glad you were able to still set up camp. Hope to have you back sometime....

For starters the location is to die for. If you are looking for back in the woods and all to yourself then pick Matt's place. But let's be crystal clear on the term backwoods... do not think your Civic or 2WD beater will make it, you will not. It is worth every moment of the drive back and short hike to camp. The sites are great size and clear. If the fire ban is lifted, bring your own wood. It is damp in the trees and too far from town for a "oops" drive back. The main site is clean and the outhouse is a God send. The shower works well and has good pressure to quick clean off an item or person if needed. Be clear on your upcoming weather pattern before even driving over the entrance dam, there is spotty cell service but weather will change on a dime. I look forward to going back for sure, it was an adventure to say the least.

I am glad you enjoyed Towering Tamaracks, Alex. And thank you for the detailed description of the site. Spring camping in the Blues can be dicey and it sound like you hit the trifecta of storms. I was there a couple days before you arrived and it was sunny and 70 degrees; go figure. I have driven both a 2WD Ranger and a Chrysler minivan to the site during the summer, but a higher clearance vehicle is still suggested. When you return later (July-October), I am sure that you will get the down time that the mountains are so good for. Thanks for the feedback on the firewood. I will get a cover for the supplied wood that is stacked in the common area so it stays dry for all campers.
