Calapooya Tipi

This was our fourth forest tipi, beautifully sheltered by a stand of tall cedar trees, and close enough to the creek to hear the comforting sound of the water. Inside there is a stone floor, a queen-size bed with a comforter, and a bedside lamp that provides a warm glow.

2021 update: we've replaced the painted Calapooya Tipi with a new all-white tipi (it has a newer material that works a bit better in the forest).

Tipi Village Retreat

Tipi Village Retreat is a haven away from the ordinary. With its secluded woodland setting, its unusual mix of dwellings (seven tipis, the Garden Cottage, the Studio, the Cabin in the Woods, and the Master Bedroom Suite), and its friendly hospitality -  it provides an ideal setting for group retreats, family reunions, weddings or commitment ceremonies, celebrations of life, workshops and other overnight events. It is a great place for any adventurous traveler wanting a unique lodging experience.

All tipis are furnished in a Zen style. They have beautiful stone floors with rugs, warm and comfy beds with down comforters and wool blankets for the cool Oregon summer nights. For a more traditional sleeping experience, please take a look at our cabin. All tipis and cabins have access to a centrally located modern bath house with two full bathrooms.

Some important site amenities include a pristine forest with hammocks to enjoy the forest sounds, a clear-blue, fresh water low flowing creek with a kiddie pool, a dining room, the nearby swimming hole, a group fire pit, a spacious hot tub, a parking lot, and a restaurant.

Breakfast is served either by the creek or on the patio. Your stay includes a wholesome gourmet breakfast of organic free-range eggs, smoked salmon, breads, hot cereals,  fresh fruit, milk, yogurt, orange juice, coffee and tea.

For 2021, we’ve closed some of our tipis to allow more space for social distancing, and since meals have always been served out-of-doors, we’re still able to provide our usual level of services to guests. Meals will not be served buffet style to limit exposure due to the pandemic. Food will be served by staff.

Location and Activities

The question is... what can't you do? We're located in Mohawk Valley near Eugene, Oregon, and perfectly positioned for adventure. We're in a central location so there are beautiful day-trip destinations to the North, East, West, or South — may they be on two or four wheels.

Eugene offers a small metropolis of activity -- Saturday Market, the Hult Performing Arts Center with the annual Bach Festival, the University of Oregon, the Oregon Country Fair, the Olympic Trials - besides miles and miles of bike paths.

The gorgeous Oregon coast is only 75 minutes west.

The Cascade Mountain Range, just 45 minutes east.

Portland to the north, Ashland to the south and, in between, some of the most gorgeous scenery in the country.

There are plenty of quiet activities to do right here at the retreat, but if you're interested in more, we're happy to help you plan nearby day trips.

You can find fishing, wine-tasting, rock climbing, rafting, theatre, bike-riding, running, waterfalls, shopping, museums, music, hiking, boating, birdwatching, and fine dining.

Day Trips

We can suggest a variety of day trips – all guaranteed to leave you with a memorable experience. Most of these destinations can also be reached on two or four wheels. Adventures vary from hiking to a pristine mountain waterfall or through an old growth forest to visiting an old mining ghost town – or dining at one of Oregon’s best wineries.

One of the closest destinations to us is Shotgun Creek Recreation Area. It is 7-10 minutes away and features lush evergreen trees, waterways, and creeks. It also offers hiking trails, picnic tables, large group shelters, horseshoe pits, volleyball and softball fields, and a swimming area.

You can also adventure to:

- The western cowboy town of Sisters, OR (great burgers here!) and the famous Lava Fields

- The Oregon Coast (get some fresh seafood here, especially in the coastal town of Florence) and Sand Dunes

- King Estate Winery and the spectacular Kentucky Falls

- Bohemia Mountain (also an easy dual sport ride to an old goldmining “ghost town”) and Umpqua River

- Warm Springs Indian Museum (get a really good sense of the area’s Native American history here)! Be sure to also check out the nearby Metolius River!

- Snow covered Mt. Hood. Lunch at the beautiful Timberline Lodge and follow the different but equally curvy and beautiful roads through Silverton, Sweet Home, and Crawfordsville back.

- Lilian Falls

- Crater Lake National Park - Oregon’s blue gem in the mountains, a site of incredible beauty. This is a long day ride but worth it to see the spectacular vistas of the lake.

Who were the Calapooya Indians?

Santiam and Calapooya Indians lived in this area but were not numerous or warlike when the first white settlers arrived. White men's diseases -- smallpox, measles, "fevers", etc. -- had depopulated western Oregon for half a century. By 1851 there were fewer than 600 Indians in the entire county; many of them were moved to Grand Ronde Indian Reservation in 1856. Little is known of the ancestors of these people (from: Benton County Historical Society and Museum).

Tipi Village was the easiest Memorial Day weekend camping trip ever. They provided beds, bedding, towels, seating areas, a dishwashing sink, and breakfast. Honestly, half of the camping gear I packed stayed in the rooftop carrier and I never thought about it until we got home and I had to unpack it all :-D
A few other things I appreciated. The buildings were all constructed by the owner who was formerly a professional builder. It was nice to see the personal touches in his handiwork. The eating and cooking areas are all outside and made for comfortable social distancing (the kids aren’t old enough to be vaccinated). The tipis look cool! Great conversations with the staff all around.

A genuine space for peace. Came for a weekend getaway from Portland. My friend and i had plans to explore the area between Eugene and Crater Lake. We didn’t get too much time on the property during the day, but the evenings were relaxed and just what we needed after exploring. The breakfast was incredible! Due to Covid the hot tub was not in service, but honestly tipi time was still great. Ken was so welcoming and friendly. I wish we had more time there, but this just means we will have to return again :)

Really awesome experience. Ken and Janet are very welcoming and gracious hosts. The tipis are well appointed and the morning breakfast is phenomenal. My wife and I spent our anniversary there and are already plotting our next visit.

Very nice woodsy, quiet retreat in an enchanting little forest garden. The quiet and the sound of the creek quickly change a stressed out mood to tranquility. This is a place to come and just relax and do nothing much, listening to the creek or enjoying the sun on the meadow.. Ken and Janet are most welcoming, and really knock themselves out making their guests comfortable. I also appreciated their respect for privacy and solitude. The breakfast was awesome, and the tipis are very comfortable.

Tipi Village Retreat is a beautiful, charming and restorative. The tipis were comfortable and inviting and the owners so very nice. The make an amazing breakfast that really fills you up for the day as well as a great cup of coffee. The hot tub was a beautiful place to soak in while looking at the moon and listening to the babbling creek.

My young children loved the chickens and the paths to explore and to ride their bikes. Great for families or a romantic getaway.
