Our property is 10-15 minutes west of Carlton, Oregon, nestled in the foothills of the coastal range. We own 62 acres, 17 of which are planted as vineyard. On the property we have our house, a winery, and a tasting room.
Be prepared to drive up 2 miles of gravel road with a short but steep hill. You will likely need good skills backing up to get into position.
I have 2 spots for RVs and a variety of locations for tent camping. Please let me know which you will do so that I can plan appropriately. There are times when I can only fit 1 RV/Trailer, so please include that in your request.
We are on a working farm and our camping spots can be in the way of the tractor. As a result, staying more than 1 night, especially Fri/Sat is tricky. Weeknights are far more flexible because our tasting room is closed and our parking area is available.
Also note, as a working farm and we have crews here nearly everyday to work in the vineyard. Please be respectful of the crew.
Update as we approach harvest: Fall is harvest time in the vineyard! With this we will be limiting our camping, specifically RVs and trailers. Normally we can fit 2, but I will be limiting it down to just 1 and only for 1 night at a time. Please reach out before booking if you are camping in an RV or trailer.
Also, the birds become a problem for us in fall. To help repel them from the vineyard, we use a bird noise maker. It goes through a series of bird calls to scare them away from the grapes. I mention it because it is loud in some spots around the property and it goes off regularly from dawn to dusk. It is usually on for about 6 weeks before harvest.
About the winery:

The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday, 12pm-5pm and by appointment. Please visit our website to schedule a tasting (chrisjamescellars dot com).

Great Wine tasting before heading up to the site. We loved sleeping and waking up in the Vineyard. Would definitely stay again.
We had a lovely stay midweek as the only campers with our trailer next to the tasting room and giant deck overlooking the farm and wooded hills. It was peaceful and easy. Beth was a great host and we enjoyed a late afternoon tasting after having a delicious brunch at the Carlton Bakery and a wine tasting at Willakenzie winery. We strongly recommend.
Everything was great. We loved having an open space for our dog to enjoy too! We will definitely come back in the summer!

Talk about views! Sunrise and sunset in a scenic valley, unpolluted night sky, views of Mt Hood and Mt Jefferson. We Winter camped when the ground was dry so Bethany let us camp in the middle of the field surrounded by vines. Dogs got to stroll around, no leashes, lots of room to roam. Hosts were doing construction on the decking so upgrades to come. She opened the tasting room so we could purchase a few bottles to enjoy at our camp spot. We took the Old Nestucca byway all the way to Pacific City upon leaving. It's a slow beautiful drive along the river with multiple Waterfall hikes to enjoy including Oregon's Niagara Falls.
Would love if the hosts would consider an earlier check in time Fall/Winter. We only has 1.5 hours before the sun went down over the coastal mountain range.

Vineyard walks with dogs and wine!
We were looking for a last minute (off season) scenic and dog friendly location near Portland, OR to test out a night in the new camper van, and this was perfect. Beth hosted a wonderful wine tasting by appointment, the environment felt very COVID-safe, and our dogs loved wandering the 25 fully fenced acres. They have an incredible selection of wines for those looking for variety, and the off leash option for the pups was a major bonus, along with being allowed to use our generator. We wouldn't hesitate to return for a night away. Van parking is in the tasting room lot, which is flat and convenient, but the best views require exploration of the vineyard or time on the tasting room patio.

So glad to hear you had a relaxing stay and that your dogs enjoyed their experience off-leash :-) We will see you again soon!
Our second visit to the location, this time with our dog. The wine was great, and the dog loved roaming around the grounds (I felt comfortable letting him as the grounds are fenced). Will be coming back!

Glad to hear your second visit went well! Next time aim for summer or fall so you can see the vineyard when the vines are green :-)
An absolutely magical spot to camp. Thanks to Bethany for being a welcoming and accommodating host. Looking forward to next year!

So glad to hear that you had a great visit!
My stay was amazing! Bethany was such a kind and generous host. The night sky was stunning, and the little spot where I had my tent set up gave me a fantastic view. I would definitely like to stay here again.

I'm glad you had a great stay and got to enjoy the stars! Come back again soon :-)
